3web -- which was a free Canadian ISP -- posted the message below on their site the other day. The thing about these losers that really ticks me off is that they went as far as to sell truckloads of these "$9.95 Free Internet For Life" CDs at HMV and Canada Post outlets across the country. I predict the company will fold within a year.

Thank you for your continued use of 3web - the first, and now the only, Canadian Internet service of its kind.
Because of you and over 600,000 other subscribers to our service, 3web is Canada's largest advertising supported Internet provider. Our unique service has been developed by Canadians for Canadians - and those of us who work at 3web are proud that our service has helped to bring the Internet to so many of our fellow Canadians over the past three years.
As you know, in order to offer free Internet access to our subscribers, 3web displays advertising on your computer's desktop. The money that 3web earns from its advertisers supports the free Internet service. Although Internet access has been provided at no charge to you, 3web does not receive the service for free. Each month, 3web pays hundreds of thousands of dollars to the major Canadian telcos such as Bell, Telus and Sprint for the Internet access that we provide for free to 3web's subscribers.
Unfortunately, although our advertising revenues continue to grow, the slow-down in spending by advertisers in Canada and general economic conditions mean that we no longer can depend only on advertising revenue to fund our service. With more and more Canadians using 3web to get on the Internet, it is becoming more and more costly to provide Internet access.
3web's objective always has been to provide Canadians with a high quality Internet service. Regrettably, we do not feel that we will be able to continue to meet this objective under current conditions. We have searched for a solution to this problem with four key goals in mind:

(3) provide 3web subscribers with a fair - and clearly communicated - opportunity for continued service; and
