We could also ask "Who has a special on burglar tools?"
Lock picks and H-cards have one regular use and it is not a very legit one

most H cards were fried by a special pulse from Direct TV. You want find a working one for 20 bucks - and if you do find a working one, likely it will be killed off fairly quick by DTV. They aren't safe anymore.

MY H card still works after black sunday, you just need a bootloader to add the extra bits that were fried from the EEPROM. And no one will give them away, look on ebay and places of the such, dealers pay good money for those cards, and anyplace that would give them away would have to have stolen them. No legit way to get just an H card.
But on a plus side, the use of these cards is completely legit up here in Canada! Since DTV (the company) doesnt exist over here, but they kindly beam there signal over aways.

You think using a decoder card is legal on the grounds that the company isn't present in your country? Mmmkay, that's cute... it might fly in a country with a non-extradition policy that's far, far away, but Canadia, however backwards, is not like that.

I got one. Whadya think it's worth ? :D
actually i belive hacking dtv is completely 100% legal in canada. I remember reading something somewhere that stated the results of some canadian trial.
apparently since directv was and still is illegaly beaming down the signal into canada in which valuable canadian frequency space is being stolen before applying for proper permits/licensing, they were denied the right to operate in the country of canada and thier signal was deemed to have no fair market value.
Since DirectTv wont let you subscribe to it's service if you live in canada (after the ruling) and you cannot steal something that has no fair market value and that is illegally entering your canadian premises in the first place. There is a widely open market in canada for such canadian directv 'acquiring' technologies. In fact canada is the #1 right now in such non-authorized-by-directv technology. It's just illegal in the us because you can buy it in the us and the signal is licensed.
or something like that?
although it DOES kind of make you wonder if getting canadian sattelite in a reversed situation (expressvu in the us? http://www.expressvu.ca) would be legal considering that it would be somewhat of the same situation (i doubt that express vu is licensed to operate in the states and i just know that thier signal is beamed down upon most of north america) and would not have any fair market value in the united states.
ben, you have to understand, not all countries have the same laws as the united states.
I'll give you an example. In canada the drinking law varies per province but is under 21 (18,19,and 20 depending on which province). American Teenagers under 21 but of the canadian drinking age go into canada all the time and go to bars and such without any hassles because it's simply legal. The same thing with mexico (if they even have drinking laws down there).
If a Canadian police officer catches a 20yr old drinking in a bar is he going to get in trouble and extradited? no, of course not......... why because what he's doing is not agains the law.
laws vary from country to country, it doesnt matter if your doing something that's illegal in another country as long as it's not illegal in the country that you are currently in.
Why do you think so many people go to amsterdam? :)

Owning an H card is NOT illegal. Therefore, one would NOT go to ANY prison for owning one. But, the $300 on ebay part is accurate.

one - H cards are considered more valuable than gold to those who know it, and rarer than a mint Babe Ruth card. You cant find them ANYWHERE, unless you buy them from someone else, who knows what theyre worth(nope, the stores do NOT have them anymore)
two - H cards are the easiest cards to hack - done properly with the right tools and programs, you can rewrite the EEPROM of the chip on the card, and get ALL the channels on DTV (yes, ALL, including adult, payperviews, premium channels and all regional channels). BUT THIS IS ILLEGAL in the U.S., and considered a federal offense - basically STEALING PROGRAMMING (YOU CAN GO TO JAIL).
three - DTV has since recalled, replaced, and killed MOST of the H cards, and replaced them with a higher encryption card, the HU card. Also known as the "football" card, since it bears a football player on the blue side. The older H cards only has the satellite logo on the blue side. This is what is inside the DirecTV systems you find in stores nowadays. NO, THERE ISNT ANY HACK FOR THE HU CARDS (yet). And DTV is more vigilant about sending out ECMs more frequntly, or electronic counter measures. Cards NOT registered in their database as activated are KILLED by these ECMs.
again, hacking the direcTV cards is considered illegal, but you can "test" the cards...:)
Thanks chosenfull, i apreciate the whole explanation. Damn ECM's i hated them ever since i saw The matrix,
anyways, if the card is killed can it be reprogrammed again and again, and so on and so forth?
Also they have them on e-bay, how are those prices?

Owning is not a crime. You are correct.
However, USING one is "theft of service"
and if you sell it with the intent to allow others to defraud (which is why you would be charging $300 vs. the $5 for an HU card) is an even bigger crime.

Where did you get this from? If you got it from mini-dish.com or i-want-my-free-dish.com, then you are getting the HU card not the H card with the system (although for $15 plus low monthy subscription fees--with no contract--they are still a great deal).

Do a search on Ebay and see if you can find an HU card for $5. I just did a search and the lowest I could find for an HU card is $50. The H card is much harder to find and therefore has a greater value than the HU card which is why it costs more. Let's not pretend that you can't do the same bad things with an HU card that you can with an H card.
Besides, who sells anything on Ebay with any intent other than to make money (which is why you charge $300--because someone is willing to pay that amount)?
Yes, most people want H cards so that they can get free tv or use them for "test" purposes. But, a seller can't do much about it. The intent of bullets are to kill/hurt yet we don't get all up and arms if those are being sold, right?
