hey, my tv and vcr both have the display things, where it shows info on the screen. unfortunately, both remotes just broke, and i need to figure out a way to get the display screen off. the tv just says SVIDEO on the corner, but its kinda annoying. the vcr has all kinds of crap over the screen. vcr is hooked up to a different, older tv, thank god. anyways, they are both SONYs, and i need to find a way to get the display screen off. anyone know a good way to get your visor to act as a remote?

Universal remotes cost $5-15 depending on features. Most do this ok (although it is not always the correctly labeled key).
You will likely need to "train" your IR so it is probably worth just getting a new remote.

Unplug them both for a couple of hours. Plug back in. Turn on. If display is still visible, take hammer to TV, then VCR.
Seriously perhaps you can reset the set by unplugging it. That's what I did one time to fix a similar problem. Worth a shot anyways.

Most universal remotes just require you to enter a code for your model of TV/VCR to set it up to work. No other programming is necessary. The remote should have the documentation with it so it is very easy.
