View Full Version : Compaq Problem - PLEASE HELP
Ok. Well my friend asked me to help him install a new 60 GB HD into his computer. The computer had been acting crappy lately (Compaq) and so he asked me to go ahead and format the main 40 GB hard drive as well. Everything went ok and I installed Win 98 SE without a hitch. I then proceeded to install the drivers for his ATI Rage 128 All In Wonder Pro. Do the routine reboot after driver installation and BAM when the Flying Windows boot screne comes on the computer goes into sleep mode. I got into safe mode, removed drivers and it boots fine. Tried getting latest drivers from the ATI site and still the same damn thing. Is there a way I can turn on safe mode is does anyone know what the hell is going on? This is why I absolutely HATE HATE HATE compaqs and all stupid computers with a sleep button. But I have left him comptuerless for 2 days now with no resolve. Any help appreciated

Compaq's used to have a small partition on the HD that contained some Compaq specific information on them. They might still be doing that. This partition told the computer how to act and was required for proper operation. The partition is hidden from your OS.

That would be a lot funnier if I wasn't trying to fix a Compaq.

Oh ya, I never posted my resolution. I formatted it again and installed from scratch. Seemed to work. Once again, CompCrap proves to be a piece.
