I am having problems with my internet access. I have Windows ME, USB modem, Athlon, Asus A7M266 and AOL. Every time my modem finishes dialling and I get in to AOL, the modem disconnects and my computer crashes. The light on the modem stays on. The light on my optical mouse goes out. Even if I can manage to make a connection it will always crash within a few minutes. If I open up an Internet Explorer page it crashes. I have AOL on another computer, internal modem, and it is fine. I have fiddled with about a million settings in the bios, in device manager, and still nothing. The modem worked fine with a previous isp. It has to be a USB thingy but I can’t see any problems.
Has anyone experienced this? Does anyone know what is going wrong? I would really appreciate any advice.
Thanks

Well the obvious problem is that you are using AOL!
After that I would say that you should start reinstalling software. Start with the AOL, better yet remove and cancel AOL then get a real ISP.
If that doesn't work, the easiest thing to do would be reinstall ME.

Yeah, already tried that. I hate AOL but I am stuck with it. Has to lose great isp when upgrading to digital tv, and AOL is the only ISP that I can get on ntl till ntl they get their act together and start offering broadband.
It is definetly a USB thingy as I swapped modems and internal pci works perfect.

the fault seems to lie with the USB connection...I think the first hint is the light on the mouse going out.
One thing to try is either a USB hub, or just switch the modem and mouse in the port. Or, try a PS2 mouse, just to see if that is a problem. Though USB is supposed to prevent conflicts, it happens, especially with modems.
