View Full Version : Burner upgrade question

Hello all, I currently have a Plextor 12x burner and I'm lookin to upgrade. I would like to move up to a 20x or 24x speed burner. My problem is I ve found it very hard to find a cd rom drive or dvd rom drive that can extract audio as fast as the 12x I got now. What drives are you all using that can extract audio as fast as it's needed to get the full potential out of a 20x or 24x burner? I think maybe I'm doing something wrong. The only dvd drive that I have used that will keep up with my 12x is a Raite 8x, and that doesn't do it all the time. The others I have tried (Panasonic 16x, Hitachi 12x) can only record on the fly at 8x. Just to clarify I'm lookin for a dvd drive(preferably) that can extract audio fast enough so that I can burn at 20x or 24x on the fly. Thank you, Joe

Thanks, I'll check into the Kenwood! Are there any DVD drives that are capable of 20x or 24x?

My Sony will rip at about 15x-18x, depending on the location on the disc.
You'd be hard pressed to find a DVD that will rip that fast as even the best DVD's tend to be less than stellar rippers. A good place to start might be the Toshibas. I've had good experience with them in the past.
Also, I seem to remember someone telling me that he gets errors and bad sound quality when he burns music CDR's at above 12x. Something to think about.
One last thing...are you planning on selling your CDRW? I need a faster burner, and wouldn't mind a used one.

What are you planing to do with your plextor?

dude, you already have a great drive for ripping. Most don't hit anywhere near there rated speed for ripping, and any drive you got now would only be a tad faster then the plextor. I'd keep the plextor, and wait.

So if I bought a 24x speed burner my Plextor 12x can extract audio fast enough to burn at 24x on the fly? To anyone interested in my Plextor, if I buy a new burner it's going into a computer I'm building for a friend. Thats if I can't use it to rip at speeds of 24x. Sorry! Thanks for the info though!
