Hey Tuvi I kayak but mostly at Mission Bay and in the Pacific. The kayaks that I use are open ended sea kayaks. They are long as hell, almost twice the size of normal kayaks, but they glide through the water with ease. I guess what matters is where you are going to be using the kayak. I'm no expert, so here are a couple of pages for you:

hey, esdee... are those double-longs harder to control? sounds like they would cut through the water really well, but i would worry about my ability to handle them...
i am torn between enjoying kayaking and secretly resenting people in kayaks when i am trying to fly-fish...

Welfare, the sea kayaks that I have ridden in are not hard to control at all. They have foot peddles that control a rudder on the back of the kayak, allowing you to steer. Other than that, the hardest thing is getting into them without falling into the water. Its so much fun, although when going out into the Pacific it can be a little hairy getting past the waves.
gravy, thanks for the links esdee. maybe i'll go all out and build my own kayak.
i'll be using the kayak in rivers as well as the ocean.. so maybe i should get one of each kind haha.

Tuvi I am working on getting a kayak trip together in SD. A few of the people I am going with are kayak experts(much more than me anyways). Tell me what you want to know and I'll run it by them.
Also, Prominx might no something about Kayaking, eh? I know he is from SD too so he might have some knowledge as well.
