"Four SGITM 2000 series high-performance servers, four Silicon Graphics® Onyx2® visualization systems, 167 Silicon Graphics® Octane® visual workstations and other SGI systems were used to create the film. Alias|WavefrontTM Maya® software was used for animation authoring on the SGI machines, and Pixar RenderMan® software was run on Linux® OS-based systems."
Slashdot featured an article (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/07/11/1745230&mode=thread) about the technology behind the movie, which featured a link to an SGI news page (http://www.sgi.com/newsroom/press_releases/2001/july/final_fantasy.html).

The last issue of "Video Store" Magazine did a feature on Squaresoft's render farm. If I find the magazine (my wife is out of town and its her subscription), I'll post specifics.
The foggy recesses of my memory tell me it had over 800 PentiumIII's for rendering, and a handfull of SG systems for the artists' workstations. I do remember the price tag: $130 Million!!!!!
Squaresoft will be lending it out to major studios in both Japan and the US.
