Hmm, I'm planning on getting a MG II anyways, but $50 for the mp3s and the extra 32 MB card that comes with the Nomad II is a great deal. When I finally do get my Nomad II MG, I'll be able to put the card in and upgrade it to 96 MB of RAM.

Well, I am all signed up so it should be here in 4-6 weeks. I figure they are selling the 32 meg card on their site for 89.99 so you cant really go wrong. Not a great selection of music though. I am now the proud new owner of 47 bucks worth of bush mp3's and a few others.

Hey, this is a great deal!!! Even though there wasn't one band that I really enjoy on that site, hey a Nomad 2 for $50???? Wow!!! I too am the owner of 4 Bush albums...LOL!!! I went for 5 KingsX songs and a full album of They Might Be Giants to round everthing off to just over $50. Thanks for the deal!

i did a search for metallica for the hell of it. surprise, no hits. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif do you think this will actually come through?

I got mine!

But hopefully emusic won't go bankrupt within 4-6 weeks.

This company can't stay in business. Nobody seems to understand that you can't sell substandard music (i.e. MP3 format) at CD prices. Emusic's 128k (geez, does anyone still encode in 128k?) is NOT worth $1 a song.

If they offered the songs uncompressed, then it may work, though still doubtful since its ecommerce.

Nice find, but before I dig in, I was wondering how much more memory would cost, say I wanted to get the most possible which is? I have no clue on how these players work, someone help me out a little please.

abatardi
05-24-2000, 11:46 PM
ken - i dunno...there's a lot of money floating around in advertising and stuff. but they'd probably be doing better off if they sold for like 25 cents per song or something. then, more people might buy... more hits...more advertising... http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif you have to give stuff away now-a-days to *not* go bankrupt.

Well... you know how the Rio formats the flash media so that it can no longer be used on a digital camera?... Whose to say that the mp3 players don't format them spefically for each other. i.e. If it came preformatted for your nomad, it won't work on your Rio. Just a thought but I'm not sure about the reasoning. 4-6 weeks is a LONG time to wait but I think I might do it anyways :P ... Anyways, good luck using that memory in anything but the nomad.

Here is a quote from the q&a section of nomadworld.com about the mem in the nomad II.

"10. What is SmartMedia and SSFDC and why is it such an important feature of the NOMAD II memory?
SmartMedia is a next-generation, NAND-type small flash memory card developed and proposed as a standard by Toshiba. This memory card is a removable storage medium Best suited for use in digital still cameras and portable information-related equipment, SSFDC stands for "Solid State Floppy Disk Card," and is the filing system format specified and used in digital still cameras and other equipment. SSFDC ensures the interoperability of the same card in multiple devices. Complying to the SSFDC format provides consumers the flexibility to exchange their memory cards with other devices such as digital cameras without the burden of reformatting for each use. "

It says mac support is available in june. Any idea whether it's the hardware that's not compatible or is it the software that we need to download in june?

There is a 10 dollar discount in my cart when i buy the mp3s, and the nomad offer strictly states that it is not to be combined with other promotions. You think this will still work?

Nothing like spending $50 for an afternoon's work on Napster. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/wink.gif

Just kidding-- very cool deal. Even got my dad in on it. I'm going to have a verrrry nice collection of MP3 players-- an original Rio (bought way back when), the Genica thing (if it ever comes) and now this... too bad the Nomad2 model is the 32 mb one and not 64. Again, I can't complain, the RAM is worth more than $50!!

Be interesting to see how it compares to my Rio...

Thanks for posting this!!

Somebody please help me out here, cuz I have a few questions abo this deal.

1) Can this specific memory be used in any other products (i.e. is it proprietary to Nomad)

2) I already own the RIO 300 (cost $25) w/32 MB memory which is definitely NOT enough. Can someone tell me a good reason to buy this Nomad when I will have to spend more than I paid for it just to have the bare minimum memory that I require? If I have to buy more memory for something, why not just buy another 32MB for my RIO?

Your help with this is appreciated!

Franco

BADFlSH
05-25-2000, 10:53 AM
Franco, the 32 meg card you get with the nomad should work in your rio and vice versa so it is probably cheeper to get the nomad package then to just go out and buy another memory card. Also its nice to have the fm tuner, that way if you get tired of listening to the mp3's you can always switch over to radio.

Sweet Deal! Thanks!

I read the terms of service and it's based on accounts so I'll have everyone in my house buy one and sell the rest on ebay. I'll use that money to buy a bigger memory card.

Also, since it's smartmedia memory and it's removable, I'll sell the 32 and get like 128....

MikeJ
05-25-2000, 10:56 AM
The Nomad II is software upgradeable. It will be able to play WMA (windows media)files in the near future. I have read that WMA has the same quality as MP3 at half the size.

Ok...is this smartmedia card interchangable with Compact Flash memory, (memory in our digital camera)?

Or are we talking apples and oranges?

Thanks in advance!

Justin42
05-25-2000, 11:41 AM
Franco, it sounds like this is just normal SmartMedia.. which means if you get this deal, you've got a total of 64mb for your Rio! Much cheaper than just about anywhere else.. you just happen to get a free MP3 player tossed in. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/wink.gif

Megan, CompactFlash and SmartMedia are 2 different things.. :/ So one won't work with the other.

There was a utility on Diamond's site a while back to reformat your memory cards to be "standard" flash media (ie, useful in a non-Rio product)... never tried it, but it's at:
http://www.s3.com/customer_caretechnical_supportupdatessoftwareAudioRIO_PMP300.htm

(woo hoo, found it!)

I was looking over the artist selection at emusic. . .there is quite a bit of good stuff if you are a metal, punk, or jazz fan. Here are some bands that I have seen: Alphaville, Bad Religion (a favorite of mine), Armored Saint, Blink 182, Bush, Fates Warning, Great White, Taj Mahal, Charlie Parker, Phish (I hate 'em, but they're big), Quiet Riot, Slayer, Smithereens, Suicidal Tendencies, They Might Be Giants, Violent Femmes, Y&T.

Hope this helps somebody. It took forever to browse through their band list.

How much is 64mb or bigger smart media card costs?

wiseguy
05-26-2000, 12:01 AM
Why pay $104+ for a 64MB SM card? Order $50
more MP3s (or a couple more for that matter) and use those cards and ebay the Nomads...

Nomad II ship with 0Mb, 32MB, or 64MB according to the CL website...

If the WMA format is half the size of MP3, that would mean about 20 songs per 32MB card I would assume; okay, but not as good as one of the Computer Geek Genica Discman-type units (and CDRs are helluva lot cheaper than smart cards).

And did anyone see those Nomad Jukebox units on the CL site amongst the Nomad stuff? $599 for something that looks like a discman, has a 6GB hard drive built in and doesn't play CDs? Are they kidding?

Whew.....I just done ordering my $50 of bogus "music" so that I could qualify for my Nomad II. Emusic.com is unquestionably the worst Internet experience of my life!! I'm whipped. Site design there is suck. It took me way too long to find even the crap that I ordered. Feels like I earned the Nomad just by enduring that sh*t!

Check this. I think I figured out how these guys are able to virtually give away the Nomad. It seems that the Nomad comes standard with 64MB of removable memory. So they just buy a bunch of relatively cheap 32MB modules, switch out the 64MB module and then sell it somewhere else. I suspect that the 32MB module is already just about obsolete, because in terms of capacity, you don't get much play at CD-quality level. What do you think?

G_Sup
05-26-2000, 01:01 PM
Franco, you can buy the Nomad II with either 0 mb, 32, or 64. However most E-sites only carry the 64.

I'm happy with my mp3 selections. They have lots of really good hip hop stuff in emusic.com. I see the LA underground in the house. Got my new Aceyalone which is only released on mp3!

I don't know why you guys a dogging the emusic.com site selection so much. Blackilicious and DJ revolution are awesome, and they even have some hard to find underground electronic bands. Plus they have an exsclusive They Might Be Giants album which is off the hook. Now I'll admit they don't have your mainstream stuff like britney spears and enya, but maybe you should expand your horizons and try out a different style of music, there is life beyong the billboard top 100.

Punk/hardcore/Emo fans: they have Hot Water Music, Threadbare, At the Drive In, and Alkaline Trio....

Good to see some underground rap fans here....Yeah EMusic has great underground rap stuff...Blackalicious, Del, Aceyalone, Princess Superstar (the first great white female rapper), Kool Kieth, and more....$50 should be easy to break as long as youre a hip hop fan.

Yep...got me some camp freestyle, various blends, unspoken heard, and, of course, one of the dopest freestyle fellowship tracks known to man...can you find the level of difficulty in this?...dope stuff. anybody have any idea how much the artists get paid for this? Happy to support the underground independent.
