networking please help a sell out

ok guys heres my setup

my dell 8100 in my room
my gateway g6-400 in the kitchen (dont ask)
printer anywhere it fits
i need to get these 2 comps to share a printer and to both run off my cable modem in my room, what equipment do i need? how much will it cost?

any help is appreciated even tho i sold out

unfortunatly my dell has win me, and my gateway has win 98 i might just end up installing 98 on my dell tho, do u mean can they see each other physically??? im a moron, with an smc router and the two comps will i be able to set up a lan party or just play games across the two comps?

With a router, you can play PC to PC and host a LAN party, depending on how many connections are on the router. The big advantage a router will give you is easy access to the internet from both PCs. You can also network them with a hub or a switch & use Internet Connection Sharing from WinME, but you will need a 2nd NIC in your 8100.

Cost? You can get a router for about $50-100 (usually with a rebate involved), plus $10-20 for CAT5 cables. A hub or a switch can be had for about $25-35, plus a 2nd NIC for about $20, plus $10-20 for CAT5.

I would recommend getting the SMC Barricade. Right now there is a $50 dollar rebate over at J&R. It is a bad ass router, 4 ports, and IT HAS A PRINT SERVER. So you can hook up the printer directly to the router and not have to waste one machine as a print server.

Well... it doesn't really matter that one computer has 98 and the other has ME. If you decide to go with a router (like the SMC barracade) you can have both O/Ses in your LAN and still be able to do everything you need to play games.

I have a friend that has this same router and a similar situation (98SE on one PC and ME on another) and his connectivity/LAN is fine.

Personally, I would go the SMC router route since it is cheap, easy to set up, and very functional. The fact that you get a print server is just icing on the cake.

I agree. This is exactly what I have running. 2 machines running win98, one ME, and a printer over the network with SMC Barricade. It is an excellent router for the price and so far in the 1 year that I have had it, I have had 0 problems. Also it serves as a firewall which in nice.
