alright gotapex, i have reason to be pissed. and not really at you, but at the internet. where is my privacy??

as soon as i get online today, a "JohnnyValientine" im's me.

here is our lovely conversation.

JohnnyValientine: If you love music and want a low priced CD Burner, check out http://www.pcpartshack.com.
freshty: who is this?
JohnnyValientine: Hey sorry to bother you, just some guy selling computer stuff
freshty: hello???
JohnnyValientine: Hey
freshty: well, you are bothering me
JohnnyValientine: Well sorry
freshty: stop bothering people
freshty: how did you get my im anyway?
JohnnyValientine: How come you're so easily bothered?
JohnnyValientine: I get lists from people who visit certain kinds of websites, it stores their names
freshty: i'm not, but when my privacy is invaded, it sorta makes me pissed
freshty: so you are stealing the names?
JohnnyValientine: Yeah, I guess I can understand that, but then you have to change your internet settings
freshty: cause there is only one site that you could my name from
freshty: and i know they don't sell it
freshty: ;-)
JohnnyValientine: When you log into websites, many of them get your information if you don't set it up otherwise
JohnnyValientine: haha oh, well maybe it was another kind of site =)
freshty: maybe not
JohnnyValientine: Your information is stored in places all over your computer you don't even know about
freshty: i do
JohnnyValientine: Pages can look through all kinds of stuff
freshty: i clear my cache everyday
JohnnyValientine: It's not just your cache
JohnnyValientine: Your registry even has stuff
freshty: i reset my cookies everytime i get offline
JohnnyValientine: Well thats a good idea, because they have stuff to
freshty: and how would you get my im name from that anyway?
JohnnyValientine: I have no idea, it all depends on what you do, are you on AOL or AIM?
freshty: i'm not telling you
JohnnyValientine: Obviously AIM and AOL have a file that stores the screen names, some of them may just target that
freshty: what if i said neither
JohnnyValientine: Okay fine, but I'm just trying to help you out, it doesnt make a difference to me
freshty: hmmm?
JohnnyValientine: Then I'd say okay cool
JohnnyValientine: Maybe quick buddy then which is probably worse
JohnnyValientine: but I dont know what to tell ya =)
freshty: ok
JohnnyValientine: Most of the new browsers support extensions that let pages run executable code and basically do what they want on your computer, so you gotta be careful

so... the only deal site i ever go on is this one. and i never go on sites that have anything to do with cd's or music. GRAAAAAAA

IT JUST MAKES ME REALLY MAD THAT I AM NOW GETTING IM'D WITH CRAP

oh, and i have AIM, not icq, so it is impossible for people to know i'm online unless they have me on their list. grrrr grrrr grrrr

how can i prevent this????

Well have you been going to the "got deals?" section and signing up for freebies? That could be one cause cuz many companies take your info and resell them. Also, I'm sure you go to other websites other than gotapex. After reading the IM, I actually feel like the johny valintino whatever guy was trying to help out. Try getting spyware removers, i bet you have all kinds of spyware hidden in your windows registry or whatnot. I have one called ad-aware, I forgot where I downloaded it, you might want to try http://www.download.com and search for it. It seems to do the job just right. I truly agree with you about the privacy issue, but with all the stuff they can do when you visit a webpage it's kinda hard to fight back.

i can relate.

I got a bizarre email spam on my cell phone and I never knew that I could even get text messages on my cell phone!!

That was a completely freaky experience!

Hey Styleee,
remember that bizarre and random "Happy Birthday" e-mail you got from some [email protected] or something?? Well, I got the same thing a week or two ago. It was wierd and sort of cool, cause I remembered your thread in the off topic forum about it. The moment I read the e-mail, I went, "hey, I know you!!"

hmmm i wonder how they can get your AIM though.... it is not what people usually have filled on a application.

I think it is really annoying when people spam ICQ... I don't know how they can send messages to peopel without them being on the list!! Is there some sort of command on a website that can do this?

O to stop people from msg you, you can always block those not on your list but that means if a friend adds you you will need him.her to email or contact you to have him.her added so it will unblock them.. kinda annoying but works...

Actually it's quite easy for ppl to spam icq. rather annoying though. they just send the message starting at 1 and ending at n, where n is some number. I don't get it as much as some of my other friends. I guess they don't bother with the sub 500000 crowd too much (and if they send me one, they tend to not like what i do.)

I get the concept of replaceing the icq number but didn't know that you can send it useing a command, didn't know there was anyplace where you can type in the icq number for sending message on ICQ (i mean kinda like "goim" in instant message to allow web links to send msg) And didn't think anyone would program such a thing :P

I am in the sub 500000 also =) so I don't get too many hehe just kinda annoying. I send a msg back saying that they are going to get sued for spaming porn to underage (no I am not) without a previous warning :)

What do you do to deter them from spamming you again? I actually think they might not log into thier account other then to spam ppl :P

well if i am on when they send it to me, i usually send a lot of traffic at their computer. Since i'm on a fat pipe and so are a few of my friends, I ask my friends to help me out in sending and re-sending the packet with the icq message "f*ck you" to the bastard that dare send me an advertisement.

yeah.. it's relatively easy and common for software to farm out e-mail links from web sites, so it'd be just as easy for them to hunt down aim and icq addresses as well.

well you don't really need to harvest icq numbers, because you already have them all.

you can block all that are not on your list... but that creates a problem if someone you know wants to contact you but you don't have thier name on your list

I like MSN Messenger because you can tell who has added you to their list. Also, someone cannot IM you unless you are already on their list.

I don't use those services, I stick with IRC. I had an ICQ account, but I was concerned about security (justly so) it was way back when, somewhere in the low 100,000's.

Is that where the term "bastage" came from?
