I bought a 3com office connect cable modem through the buy.com deal of the day about a week ago. I'd like to use it instead of renting the current cable modem provided by Cox@Home (and save $15 a month).

Has anyone purchased a modem instead of renting it? What information do you have to provide to Cox@Home? I know they need the Ethernet (MAC) address of the cable modem. Do they need the serial number or anything else?

Cox@Home (for Orange County) told me they don't support any 3com cable modems. I don't think it would matter since everything is on the DOCSIS standard. I'm considering telling them I have a Toshiba 1100 and giving them the MAC address off my 3com. If it doesn't work, I'll probably try to Ebay the modem (since buy.com will only exchange it for the same item).. If any of you have a Toshiba 1100 modem could you tell me what the format for the serial number is? I'll just make one up when I call in..

Thanks for the help!

I use cox@home in Phoenix,AZ and I bought my own 3com cable modem. There were no problems at all in setting up or using the modem, but the support people were suprised to see a 3com cable modem, as most people get the toshiba or the motorola. I don't remember what info they asked for, but I think they wanted the modem's mac and the serial, too. Cable internet rocks and I wouldn't trade my modem for any of the other brands.

good luck,

Good man, chosenfool. Make sure you keep those priorities straight. You can always find another girl, but 56k will always suck. In the same vein, my wife has commented on wanting to move and I told her that the next place would have to get @home service or I wasn't interested.

Thanks for pointing me to that thread. I guess I'm not the only one in this situation.

Did you end up getting the modem working? Did you give AT&T the ethernet address of your 3com cable modem? I wasn't even able to get that far with Cox, they just told me its not supported. I'm going to try again.. I'll post if I make any progress..
