Attention Network Guru's: One ip, two comptuers, THREE NIC's?

I'm going to be sharing one IP address from @home, and I've heard a bit about using a hub instead of a router for getting this done. It consisted of having one computer have two ethernet cards, one going to the broadband connection, the other going to the hub, set as local network. Then the second computer simply plugs into the hub. I'm going to be doing this with Win2k, so, any suggestions?

I think he's referring to the fact that you can pay your ISP for an extra IP address. Anyways, if your sharing a single IP address, your setup is fine as is. You can use Win2k's internet connection sharing to make an easy connection.

Your setup is fine. It might be better to just buy a router and keep one NIC in each computer. The only reason I'm saying this is that router prices have been coming down a LOT and then you don't need one computer (the one with 2 NICs) on in order for you to use the internet on the other one..

Well, I got two 5 buck NIC's so I'm pretty sure that a hub + 5 bucks is cheaper than a router!

You can do what you are talking about with ICS and not have to get a router, but I think that other people are just making that point that a router is a much more elegant solution. A hardware solution is almost always better than a software solution, in my opinion (for example, real modem vs. winmodem). I don't know how many hours I put into trying to get all the bugs worked out of ICS for my home network before I just broke down and got a netgear router when it went on sale. It was set up in ten minutes and has worked flawlessly. If you do try the ICS route, I wish you better luck that I had.

now that i know i need only 1 ip im using a hub my damn router cost too much and is sucks majorly!!!!!!!!!! i have win 98 and me but i use 98 is there connection sharing in 98 i dont know about???

I am using similar set up for 1 1/2 yr now, the router price back then is expensive thanks to ICS w/ win98se. it was reliable and cheap setup. i had dual boot win2k/win98 w/ two nic and win 98 alone on the other w/ one nic. i used the netgear networking kit w/ 4 port hub.
as far as security, i just back up my files on a cd or i save on a differnt partition. I think ICS suppose to act as a firewall as well..not really sure though..

well, if you're definitely going to have ONLY 2 computers, you don't even need the hub.
get yourself a twisted pair cable and just hooke the 2nd nic to the other computer.
BAM!

I've read a bit about crossover cables, as well. Would that do the same thing?
I'm looking for the most budget conscious but still working solution, and keep in mind all I have are NIC's right now.

Cheapest route for the 2 pc's is run ICS and get the crossover cable for the client computer.

DO NOT use the same exact nic's in the host machine. It will drive you nuts trying to set it up.

ICS runs NAT firewall but it is limited. Download Zonealarm for free. I have since upgraded to a Linksys router. But the ICS route worked just fine.
Also I used ICS with a dialup free service. Nice thing was the client didn't have to see any banner ads at all.
