View Full Version : What are .ROM files and how do I open them?

Just got a removeable hard drive and they had a few of these on there.
Likely to be pictures or video (because they are 100-500k on average) but not sure.
Thanks for your suggestions.

From the Filex File Extension List (http://camalott.com/~rebma/filex.html): ROM -- "ROM emulation file. A file containing ROM data." Maybe you've got some arcade ROMs or something on there...

Hmm.. not sure if they're game roms for emulators cuz most of the games end in extensions regarding to the system being emulated. For example, .gb for gameboy, .n64 or .z64 for Nintendo 64. Well, I'm not sure about all the other roms, so I could be wrong. Do they have a filename? or just *blank*.rom?

arcade roms would have the rom extension. You can't open them except with a hex editor, or you can run them with MAME or whatever system they are intended for.

They have basically sequential filenames.
I can send one or two to someone if you want to play with them.
