Hi all...

I have one of the HP 5125 walmart laptops. I know you can interchange CPU's in this model. I have a 500 Celeron in it. I bought a 1000Mhz to drop in to see what it would do.
When I boot the laptop it see's the CPU as PIII 1000Mhz/256Cache. But, when I run any Sysinfo utils like Sisoft Sandra it says the CPU is ony running 697Mhz.
All of the Intel Speedstep stuff is turned off.

WinXP says 697Mhz and so does WinME.

Is there something in the OS that could be limiting the speed ?

Ofcourse HP says you can't swap out the CPU's, so they are quite useless.

Anyone know who might be able to help me ? Or a site I could post this question to ?

Thanks.. Jake

Try WcpuID. If it still says 697mhz, speedstep is still turned on. 1Ghz mobile processors step down to 700mhz on speedstep.

Another thing to try is looking in the bios. There may be a place to set cpu speed (auto or OS controlled, battery maximized, performance maximized). Take it off of auto (or OS controlled) and put it at max performance.

I'll try the wcpuid... I was thinking exactly what you did cause I rememberd that 700Mhz was the fallback speed for speedstep..I did try turning on the bios option for maximized performance, but... Back to 700 it showed..

Thanks for the help..

did u ever consider that the motherboard might not support that speed chip?

Well, yes. I assume the board won't support that speed. But, that information is not posted anywhere. So I have a 850 and a 700 coming this week to make 100% sure.

Even if it only runs at 700Mhz it's still sweet.

700Mhz CPU
256meg RAM
20GigHD
DVD
SMC Ethernet
Modem
Floppy

Not bad to be in one package and STILL cost less than $1k :)
