PLEASE HELP

ok i reloaded windows98 cause it got messed up and now the colors are messed up. I go to settings in the customize my desktop and select 256 colors and it asks if i want to restart the computer so the settings can take effect, well i do and it restarts but doesnt change anything. What do i do???
