Memo

Isn't it great to be rudely awakend at 9 am on a Sunday morning by the police? Woke up.....Police ringing the doorbell at least 20 times. Seems someone threw a landscaping rock straight at my windshield that night. Winshshield looks like an inverted bubble. Also had a brick thrown at the side window. Bastards, at least when I did this in high school, we only took down mailboxes! ;) Well, now I get to blame that scratch my ex-girlfriend put in the door on these vandals ;) $500 deductible and no other vehicle to get to work in. Ain't it a bitch.

Windshield places generally PAY YOUR DEDUCTIBLE.

Just shop around or check out something like ValPak (http://www.valpak.com) and find a place. Sometimes they will even pay you!

Lol no, stereo never stolen out of my truck. I live in a good neighborhood. Kingwood, TX. It just that theres nothign to do here so all the kids just drink and party and then go vandalize crap. You might remember national news 2 years ago when 4 girls went around robbing stores for money to buy drugs. It's actually a safe neighborhood. George Foreman lives here as well as a few celebrities. But the kids here are ****. Hhaha the kids.....funny, I just graduated High School a year ago ;-P

TLG,

You state that "Windshield places generally PAY YOUR DEDUCTIBLE". I don't think so.

If you carry comprehensive coverage on the vehicle, insurance companies will generally pay your deductible if they can fix the windshield instead of replacing the windshield (like a small crack).

UT Memo - don't think they can just patch up your windshield. Although it's too late to do anything about this windshield loss, I'd recommend asking your insurance agent for some price quotes on lowering your comp deductible - the price generally is not that much different for a lower ded.

Just my 2 cents...

As well they should! Dayuum dirty insurance companies...!!!

I remember back when I caught a rock driving through the Smokey Mountains... I had to get a new windshield put on my T-Bird...

Well, the actual cost of my windshield was about $1,500... but with my zero deductable comprehensive insurance policy (State Farm), I didn't have to pay any of it...

Now what I am wondering is... for those who do have deductibles... does the insurance company get to choose who you take the vehicle to? My insurance company sent me to their windshield people, but since I didn't have to pay for it... I didn't care.

Either way, I have seen those deals where the glass companies will pay some or all of your deductible, but I was just wondering if there was a "catch" like them raising the price of the windshield above what the insurance is willing to pay, therefore making you pay more...

(like charging $1,700 for $1,500 windshield and then giving you like $50 to $100 towards your deductible... knowing that the insurance company is gonna give them $1,500 minus your deductible.)

The insurance company can't legally force you to use one of "their" shops. Every time I have had to have my windshield replaced (yep, more than once)I insisted on taking it to the dealer and getting a genuine Saab windshield. My insurance agent tried to get me to use some cheapo glass shop but I told him to shove it.

And no the companies that "pay your deductible" can't jack up the price. Each car has a set price for each part that the insurance company will reimburse a repair shop for. How these guys can make money while paying your deductible is by putting a cheap aftermarket windshield in your car and charging for an OEM original. They get paid to replace a windshield period. It is up to you to make sure you are getting what your insurance company (and you) pay for. There is a huge difference in quality in some of these windshields, if these glass shops can afford to pay your deductible they are making some cash somewhere. They sure as hell aren't doing it to be nice.

I think that the state picks up the tab for the deductable. The rock was on a public street of highway in wost cases, making them liable for damages as they maintain the roads.
I heard it is cheaper just to pay than keep going to court for each case.

Well, the windshield was 300 bucks. They did send me one of their people, but I had the option to choose my own. I really didn't care as long as they fixed it. They replaced it with a genuine ford windshield as well. I then have to take the invoice to the shop so that the shop can remove that 300 from their price or soem crap. Basically, i'll end up paying 300 bucks for a good amount of damage.
