*sigh* Another dilemna.

I've decided to get an IWill KK266 mobo, since those are (from what I hear) great motherboards. My friend (who knows a substantial amount more than me about building PC's) mentioned that I could also just get a Duron and overclock the hell out of it...and that the only real difference between an Athlon and a Duron is that Duron's have less cache. BUT I don't know what Duron processor is best for overclocking (if there is one that is actually better than the rest), nor do I know if I want to tool around with it - as opposed to just plunking down a little more cash and buying a *true* Athlon CPU (probably a 1.3 or 1.4 gig one).

Any ideas?

Just get a high speed athlon like the 1.33Ghz tbird. They are cheap enough.

Well looks like the other guys didnt really help much ;-P It all depends what you're gonna be doing. Obviously more cache is better, so if possible, a Athlon would beat out a Duron. But if your major priority is cash, a Duron is an awesome processor. Especially with Duron 700's costing less than 30 bucks and easily overclocked to 1 Ghz. If you wanna go for the cash. a 1.3 Ghz Athlon is only about $130 OEM i belive. If you want to save, get a duron, that's about it.

Absolutely,

Athlons are extremely inexpensive and a gig cpu can be netted for under $100. Plus the larger cache and stuff helps all around.

I found a good deal on a 1 ghz Athlon CPU for $109 that is overclocked to 1.6-1.7 ghz. WOW what a screamer. ;)

Yeah, actually now the site is sold out so oh well. I figured anyway - I'd rather get a TRUE chip than one that had a lower *normal* speed; therefore I'm just going to go the safe route and get a 1.4 gig Athlon chip. I've already bought a huge heatsink/fan off a friend of mine (a 7,000 RPM fan with a dual-ball bearing fan and a true copper heatsink), so the chip will be nice and cool. ;)

heh, sounds good, i'm going to have to go with tux though the duron 750's are the bomb i think they're down to like 24 now, and if oc'ing is your flavor they easily crack 1ghz.

but damn i must say those 1.4's are the bomb. the 1.2 was a screamer, i can only imagine what a 1.4 is like. hehe probably can't tell a difference.
