Rio Receiver at Best Buy

My local Best Buy has the Rio Receiver on sale for $149.50. It'll play mp3 and wma files from your computer to a remote location using either your home network connection or phone line. There's a PCI card included to connect your computer to your phone line. Here's the link to the product homepage: http://www.riohome.com/products/receiver.htm. They have three left if anybody's interested. I couldn't find a better price on the net. Since I'm in the process of converting a lot (1300+ CDs) over to MP3 and running my own music server, this machine comes in handy for listening in a remote location. I was originally going to use a small computer for this function, but now it's not necessary.

I don't think Cox@Home would like me running a server to the outside world. But I wonder what amount of information being downloaded from me would attract their attention. As for the music, I like most everything except for two types (which I won't list here). Most of my music is of the greatest hits or hits of the xx (years) variety. I finally decided to start making MP3s because I rarely listen to a 'normal' CD anymore. I've got four MP3 players that I like to use, and I'm getting tired of converting music every time I want to use them. Now I'll just do all of it at once (actually over a long period of time). I'm using EAC - Exact Audio Copy with my IOMEGA 12x10x32 for the ripping and LAME (RazorLAME or WinLAME) for the encoding. I can throw a ton of WAV files on the hard drive, have them converted, the WAV file deleted, and then the computer shuts off. Definitely saves me a lot of time.

also look into audio catalyst...ive been using that program for a while, and i love it. It even names the tacks for me and sets up the folders the way i want


I have a folder called 'Albums' AudioCat creates a folder for the band name to put it in, then a sub folder of th album name. the song is then named in this format

Band - Album - Track number - Song Title.mp3

Why are you coping files to the HD in WAV format? Why not just go directly to MP3 with the many programs out there. (I suggest CDex, its freeware and names files for you anyway you want, check CDDB, all that stuff). Anyways.. Just curious why you go to WAV first when its not needed.

Audiocatalyst is evil. Do NOT use that. As far as I know, they use Xing's codec for MP3 conversion, and their codec has been notorious for frequency cutoffs lower than other codecs (i.e. Fraunhofer or LAME) resulting in sub-par MP3s. I don't know if the newer versions of Audiocatalyst are any better, but LAME is the best solution out there. It's free and it's probably one of the best MP3 codecs out there.

I just recently converted about 1000 CD's to MP3, I had to do it in a week...

I had 5 PC's all doing it @ one time....


That was an adventure!!!....

Thnak god for the CDDB otherwise I would have lost my mind....
