View Full Version : Indigo Orb, how you suck, let me count the ways...

Get this, measured at 2Ghz (P4), both using no thermal pad, but rather a thin, even layer of Arctic Silver II thermal grease, both using the EXACT same retension mechanism:

Volume:

Indigo Orb: 30dB (though sounds louder than my Panaflo 120x38mm 68.9cfm 30dB fan, so I'm guessing closer to 33dB or so)
Intel Retail Heatsink: 26dB

IDLE:

Indigo Orb: 111 degrees F
Intel Retail: 107 degrees F

MAX TEMP WITH BURN-IN:

Indigo Orb: 143 degrees F
Intel Retail: 135 degrees F

UGH, and the Indigo Orb was an improvement on their Golden Orb.

So it looks like I only have two choices, both of which are about $50 or more:

Swiftnet MC462A ($80)
Zalman CNPS5000 Plus ($50)

I guessed as much, but it was free and supposedly the best thing out there when I received it. Bah. No one makes good, reasonably priced P4 heatsinks. Just because they run cooler doesn't mean people don't wanna push em.

Are there any Alpha coolers that work with the P4's, I have been wondering this for a while. for example the 6035 it was a pretty hefty cooler but is the retention compatible with the P4 hardware?

I don't believe that they do yet.

the zalmans are nice. it keeps my cpu temp really low and the only fan i have near it is the rear exaust fan.

wat i really need to do is find a better heat sink for my chipset. that ****er gets warm.

Find a old Petium1 HSF and use thermal adheisive to stick it on. I have heard that that is the best chipset cooler you can get.
