Need to get an external burner for a laptop. Nothing fancy just needs to be able to backup files and burn the occasional CD. Any suggestions on where to look and what to buy? Money is tight so any deals would be appreciated.

Thanks for the tip, found a good deal over at Staples. Acer 4x4x6 for $149 with a $50 rebate offer.

http://www.staples.com/Catalog/Browse/sku.asp?PageType=1&Sku=451073&bcFlag=True&bcSCatId=3&bcSCatName=Technology&bcCatId=18&bcCatName=Peripherals&bcDeptId=1429&bcDeptName=Drives+&+Storage&bcClassId=140459&bcClassName=CD-R+&+CD-RW+Drives

Not too shabby. Only question is whether the x6 reading will be enough? I also found this deal over at Outpost for a firewire external cd-rw.

My laptop doesn't have a firewire port, would it be hard/expensive to install one? Just curious. I am probably going to buy the one from Staples. Any comments?
Thanks again.

Keep in mind that most USB drives will need to be plugged into a wall outlet for power. If you need to burn on the go, that's bad. Many firewire drives can be powered by your laptop. If money's not a problem, firewire drives can also be a LOT faster. The maximum reliable speed of a USB drive is 4x (many drives need to be set to 2x). Any speed is possible with firewire.
