Xircom REX 5001 Micro PDA w/Serial Cradle

Sync's with serial cradle OR in the pcmcia slot of most laptops (that's why I have it)...

Currently on the front page of http://www.vstore.com/cgi-bin/pagegen/vstoreelectronics/gotapex/page.html?mode=itempage&file=/page/itempagev4/itempage.spl&prodID=1630057, but in case the page changes, it's also item#:1630057

I looked into getting the REX 6000 because of it's size. I read a lot of user comments on a lot of sites. I decided not to get it. The 6000 had a lot of bugs with syncing... Interestingly though, I ran across many REX 5000 owners who upgraded to the 6000. They said that the 5000 was a much better PDA. If I hadn't just got a Handspring Visor a few months ago I'd get this one...

I've had a REX-3 and currently have a 5001 and a Sony CLIE. i love having both. the Rex3 was inconvenient because you needed a computer to input, but the 500x is great because you can input data anywhere. I take it with me whereever I dont want to take my Palm with me. One problem is that the first time you sync you will have to map all the different fields with the ones you use with your pda or pim (such as outlook). This will only affect you if you have more than one pim or device. I've also heard that you can sync directly with a Handspring or PocketPC via the pc card slot, but you have to find special drivers. Also note that the 5001 does NOT have any backlight, atleast mine doesnt.

which would be better the Oregon Scientific ECHO 512K Touch-Screen Digital Assistant

or the Xircom REX 5001 Micro PDA w/Serial Cradle

I decided to choose the xircom rex 5001 I hope I choose the right one but I found out that overstock has them in stock so it will cost a total of 43.94 shipping included since overstcok has the 10 dollar off which you can see at the bottom of the deals page of gotapex just go in their and I hope it's got the same stuff

cost is 49.99 shipping 3.95 total of 53.94 (For residents with no tax ex. CALI) -10 dollar first time customer = 43.94 final price shipped

You can get some info about the xircom on yahoo just look for xircom pda's the xircom 5001 pda has 2 reviews by ppl which you might be able to have an opinion on or just compare it with some other device on yahoo as well. I decided on it because the orgnization looked a lot better then the oregon one I saw for 69.99 it's simple and consise rather then one of the big pda's and wallet sized so it won't be a drag to carry it around. But check the reviews out they seem to like it not certain how good the reviews are but that's one place to look

The review on http://www.geek.com/hwswrev/pda/rex5k1/ (geek.com):

I give Xircom's REX 5001 all 5 Geekheads for Quality. It is small, light, very sturdily constructed, and includes all the accessories a mobile user needs. The metal casing feels solid, and the operating system has a very polished, well-thought-out feel. My previous REX, the model 3, was sat upon, stepped on, dropped, and then finally met its demise on its third trip through the washing machine. The only other device that has stood up to that level of abuse is my still-functioning Newton MessagePad 120. I doubt it could take the washing machine, but I think it even less likely that I'd forget to take it out of my pocket.

There are some interesting comments about the REX 5001 on Amazon.com

Just search for 'Rex 5001'

I also have a REX. One cool thing is you really don't need a docking station if you have a laptop. The thing uses a PCMCIA port so it is convienient to leave the sync software on the laptop and update any phone lists or whatever there, then sync it.

They also make a special wallet that has a hard case to fit your REX in it. My wallet is fat enough already to worry about that, but it would be cool.

I have a polished brass business card holder($6) that my network pc card fits in. I imagine it would make a handsome case for the Rex. I think there's enough room on the side to hold a stylus that has been halved as well. I'm trying to talk my girl friend into getting the Rex 5001 for me for our anneversery.

I have a Visor, but it's just too big to carry all the time. I think I'm going to leave it in my briefcase, and carry the Rex on my person.

Is the Rex good for appointments and scheduling? Also, I use Outlook. Does Rex 5001 sync well with outlook?

Not to change the subject or anything, but does anyone know how the hell electronicswatch.com can sell stuff so cheap? Take a look at the home theater system on the same page. It's supposedly $370 OFF of $499, so it's $129. Is this site for real? Anyone ever order from them?

Brewmaster, did you read the part about 'virtual' Dolby...

wtf is that. Probably not worth $129--put it that way.

It might fit in your card holder, but you may not be able to access the buttons, it cant hurt to try if you want it. it is ok for scheduling, on the computer its easy, but if you do a lot of scheduling on the go it gets hard because you have to use the arrow buttons to input everything. so if you type a lot of stuff it will get tedious. if i remember correctly it works great with outlook. MAKE SURE YOU DO A BACKUP OF EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO SYNC FIRST!!!! i cant emphesize that enough. it works super easy if you just want to sync outlook with the rex and nothing else, but gets much more complicated as you add more pims and devices.

Ya, you would have to take the rex out of the card holder to use it. It's just that the card holder is pretty sturdy, so you could carry it in your back pocket without crushing the rex.

I was just wondering about the scheduling because I was considering selling my Visor. If the rex does it all, I don't need the extra web content and programs that I can put on the Visor.

But I think I'll probably be able to use both since the Visor is much easier to input to.

Has anyone had experience syncing the Rex and another PDA on the same computer? Is it much trouble?

The reason how they are selling so cheap is they are going through vstore. If you look at one of the vstore merchants, they have the *exact* same format.

The rex has a calender, address book, to do list, memo pad and clock, thats it. if you dont need more than that its all good. but to input any data is a pain if its longer than a few words or a sentence. syncing both on the same computer can get confusing, but only the first sync. after that its smooth sailing.

One time, just for the hell of it, i synced my rex, rex pro, palm pilot, truesync desktop, truesync plus, palm desktop, yahoo, truesync.com, excite and outlook 2000 all at once. it was extremely complicated, but after about half an hour i got it all to work well, not perfect. the problem is that not all fields in your different devices and PIMs will match up. for example cell phone may be cellular phone, mobile phone, car phone, or it may not be listed at all. some devices or PIMs may have home 1, home 2, home 3 or work phone 1, work phone 2, etc... the rex has these fields while palm os does not. so if you use one of these fields in the rex, it will not show up in the palm or may be mapped under a different catagory if improperly mapped. i suggest you stick with one PIM (outlook in your case), truesync plus (included on the rex installation cd), palm device (in your case, visor), and the rex. i also jusggest setting up your rex to use palm os style catagories to minimize confusion between devices. if you use any programs with your palm which rely on syncing with your palm to work you may need to re instll them. some of these programs include backupbuddy, installbuddy (you dont need to reinstall these, just run the program once, it will say something about files being corrupted press ok to repair. this is ok, just press ok), and mcafee virus scan. any program which uses a hotsync conduit may and probably will be affected by this.
hope this info helps and isnt too complicated.

Ahha! I checked out the vstore.com thing and it's pretty cool. I might do that myself sometime....

Actually, if you want you can go through Apex's vstore. He has one, but I don't remember the url to his. He usually posts it in the deals page from time to time. So, instead of giving electronicswatch.com the commission, we could give it to Apex instead, that is only if we are buying...
