Lightning just hit very close to my house......

Just shut off? Don't you have to unplug stuff for it to be safe? And... don't surge protectors help in this situation?

Depends on your deffinition of surge protecter. If you mean something like UPS then yes. If you mean the 9.95 power strips, then your right you should unplug it.

right now i am using an APC Surgearrest...I do have two SMART UPS's under my bed (in storage).

But I have bad luck, and when lightning hits within 30 feet of my window...i shut it off and unplug.
