In my search for another pristine 300zx I have found that it is extremely hard to find one. And after being told to get the hell off of one dealers property for trying to negotiate a deal by proving that his "no accident car" had its front end replaced, and the engine cover cracked among other problems, I have decided I have some interest in A4's.
Here's the problem I know I can only afford a 97 model at the latest and most likely would be looking at 95 and 96's but I dont know squat about audi's. I would want one that had available upgrades and performed similarly with my Z with only minor tweaking. I think the 2.8 would give me this over a 1.7turbo but i am not sure. R there turbo's or superchargers available for the 2.8's I have seen some available upgrades but haven't found any for these model years. If you have knowledge on the subject or just advice please share. Maybe I should just wait to find the perfect Z???

There are 300+hp kits available for the 1.8T engine. There was just recently a supercharger kit released for the 2.8L.
Supercharger will run about $5k, and the 300+hp turbo kits are about the same for the 1.8T. I have a 240hp turbo upgrade kit, that runs about $1800 (I have a Passat 1.8T). The 280hp kit is $4k, and there is another that just came onto the market at 265hp for $3600.
Just a chip on the 1.8T is ~$400+ and will put you at 200hp, depending on your model 300zx, that might be about equal.
Here is a good place to start looking: http://www.audiworld.com/classifieds/index.html

From time to time. I don't like the fact that the damn place is getting so commercialized. Although I really like the new software on Vortex.
Audiworld has a more mature crowd, which I appreciate, and every post isn't a sales post.
ClubB5 (Passat place) is pretty good for B5 specific things.

I agree. The Vortex is kinda commercial, but they do have nice news pieces. Their forums system kicks ass, G|A? might want to take a look. My dad just got a new B5, it should arrive in the next few days. I'll check out Audiworld, do they have a VW forum?

i'd definitely suggest vwvortex for this question. although it might be getting a bit commercial, the people there are still the most vw/audi knowledgable bunch i've encountered.
as for the 1.8 vs 2.8
personally, i'd for for the 1.8T, more fun to mess around with (already turbo'd)..lighter and a great engine. i don't know much about the 2.8l. there was an issue of european car where someone tuned a 1.8t that was running head to head with an S4...worth looking up.

I think I am gonna keep looking for a Z though. The prices on Audi's in my area are a little steep to have to spend another few thousand to get it to the performance level I want. Even though my Z was an NA I loved it and didn't mind if it wasn't faster than some other cars, but I dont want to replace it with something that I would be less satisfied with. Maybe it'll change if I see an audi for the right price and it feels good when I drive it. I will keep u all posted, thanx again for ur help.
BTW-If you see any 1990-1994 300zx's for sale shoot me an email. Preferably black or blue. Twin turbo or 2+2, and yes folks an automatic. thanks

I actually got hooked up on a group-buy (GIAC chip for my A4) from a post at the club b5 site.
It worked out great. I was the only A4 in the bunch... but God bless the 1.8T. The 1.8T owners stick together. I saw a cool Ink Blue Passat at the shop on the day of the install. Never seen one before that day.
By the way... the chipped 1.8T is VERY nice.

Audi Audi!
Audi's are pretty good. Like all cars, they have their little problems (i.e. failing bushings necessitating swapping out the entire control arm assembly, leaky power steering pump deal, etc. etc) but all in all, they're not bad.
The 1.8T is only available from 1997 on-wards. All the previous Audis (with I thik '96 being the first year) are 2.8s. The 96 2.8s, however, are not the 5 valve per cylinder type as the 97+ 2.8s so you should skip over any 96s.
Advice.... go with the 1.8T. The 2.8 is nice but the 1.8T is turbocharged and easily modifiable. Now, you have to remember that the A4 is a little sedan, not a sports car. I don't know if it can replace your 300Z. It's not gonna be as tight on the turns nor will it accelerate quite as well given that it weighs probably a good 600 pounds more at least.
Keep that in mind. It's why I kept the RX-7. :)

Bothe your cars are very nice. I would get an rx-7 if i could afford a new motor every 60k. And your audi pic was why i am even considering getting one. what yr is ur rx7 and how much were the rims on it? I may not have a car but when i get one i know what i want. Pete

Now now....
The RX-7 actually isn't that bad of a car in terms of blown motors. It's just a little bit more high-strung that other cars is all... You just have to get things right and it'll treat you well.
The RX-7 is a 1994. The rims back then were very expensive because I had to import them into the States. Now, they may be cheaper because I think companies import Advans... on the other hand, they may be more because Advan doesn't make them any more. The rims are kind of plus/minus... some people like 'em a lot, some people hate 'em.
And rims are like hats. Different ones look good on different cars. It's kind of individualistic...

Well I like the rims, so I would consider getting them. Of course a car is top priority. By teh way anyone live in virginia there is a Z at a local dealer I may go check out but if you can save me the trip I will send you $20 in exchange for some pictures. Its at a dealer in richmond called willow lane somthing. Email me if you would like to do me a favor. Thanx.

There was a '96 auto w/ 60k miles for just under $21k about 50 miles from me, according to traderonline.com

but thats a little steep for me I am looking to spend 10-13k but would finance a few more thousand for the right one. 94 is probably the latest I can hope to get in that range and only with a lot of mileage. The problem is a lot of dealers jack up the prices incredibly high, a nissan dealer by me called and said they were getting in a 91 I was excited until they told me they were asking 23k for it. WTh??
