this is too funny or ironic for me not to mention..

i stated earlier in the day that I feared powerful white people... then changed it to powerful RICH white people... so let me define POWER here.. there are 3 faces of power (polisci honors 180: 'WHo has power in America?')

1) first face of power - Active power
the power of the law you feel when you see a cop.. or the power you perceive a judge to have, or a parent, or even a teacher.... they can take actions

2) Second face of power - power to dictate what is spoken about
again.. this could be controlled by anyone.. Apex holds this power.. becuase he censors some of the words we use...

3) Third face of power - Passive power
let me give a political analogy, because I can't think of a good non-political one... lets say your community is holding a meeting and you want to discuss hard water levels.. if no one recognizes you at the meeting to speak, then your subject isn't brought up... their NON-actin affects you..

so... I don't want to clarify what form of power I wnted to be used for my statement.. instead I want to tell a story that happened RIGHT AFTER i turned off my computer!

I pick up my notebook to go to class.. my wallet, and my phone... i go to the door.. lock it from the inside.. then close it... i pat my pocket to feel my keys... NOTHING THERE! DOH!! i locker myself out of the apartment...

no problem i thought.. i'll just ring up the manager.. he has to have SOME form of a master key... so i ring him up through the intercom at the front gate... but he isn't here... tells me to try a credit card on the door...
so i used my student ID.. went at it for like 15 minutes.... and decided to ask if the maintenance guy was here...

so i ring up the manager again.. and he tells me the guy isn't there now (he lives in our complex)... and he tells me he has a meeting at 12:30 (it was like 12:20) and that he wouldn't be back until 2:30 pm...

so i tell him i'll try to keep on doing the card thing..and i'll just wait for him...

so.. i try the card thing again.. and i look at the key hole.. and i think 'hmm i wish i had a knife or something to use on this thing..'

i try stuff from my wallet, but nothing fits.. so i start knocking on my neighbors doors... EVERYONE is gone.. either at work or school.. or SOMETHING... all escept the people at apartment #4....

they are new.. haven't met them yet...

so i go to the door.. and i see this skinhead sitting on the sofa.. with sungalsses on.. knee high socks...a wife-beater .. and long shorts.....this was our conversation:

ME: 'sup man.. i locked myself out of my apartment and i was wondering if you had a knife i could use to open the door'

enter a blond lady with a somewhat scared look on her face.. and confusion

HIM: 'naw.. sorry bro.. don't have a knife on me'

ME: 'all i need is like a kitchen knife.. not anything sharp...'

HIM: 'this isn't my house.. i'm not at liberty to give you a knife... why don't you wait for the lady to come back?'

ME: 'alright...'

wait in front of the door.. while the guy stares at me.. enter his friend.. not wearing a shirt.. skin head also.. same clothing.....

Guy #2 looks at me with a face stating 'What the FRICK are you doing here... especially waiting in front of the door!!'
looks at GUY #1 on sofa... with confusion.... I see WHITE POWER tatted on his back.. in cursiv(sp?)....

Guy #1: 'why don't you try a neighbor or something'

Guy #2 slams the door in my face before I could say a 'Thanks' or give any form of a reply

these people.. one may argue hold no power what so ever.. BUT... I think they showed the THIRD FACE OF POWER... passive power...

by not giving me a knife.. taking NO ACTION.. they didn't help me much with my dilemma....
if my irish, cuban, american, or mexican neighbors were home.. they would have given me a knife no problem.. maybe even help me out....

so THIS is what i meant by powerful white people..... whether it be neo-nazis, republicans, democrats, hicks, it doesn't matter.......

from my personal interactions with other races.. i find that most know they have been hindered in life by another.. becuase they are usually the minority.. so they help each other out.... but not white people.. cause they haven't really been oppressed in the history of this country...

luckily... by manager came to open the door.. and went late to his meeting.. i need to think of something nice to do for him...

You are telling me that white people (who apparently are not Irish) would not have helped you, while anyone else would have because they have been oppressed at some time? I manage a Metal band where some of the members have certain "white power" tattoos. They know I am Jewish (I don't let them forget it) and they also know that I have them by the balls. This is some deep irony.

One of my other clients actually wanted me to defend him on the grounds of free speech for creating Nazi paraphenalia.

Also, I was able to get certain people in power to make some "White Power" members build a place of worship for the Jews while I was vacationing in Camp Janet Reno. (I still laugh about that one)

If a stranger that I never met came to my condo asking for a knife to break into a neighboring unit I would ask to see proof that he lives there. If he could prove it, I would loan him a knife or a ladder or whatever. Reguardless of his race (unless, of course, he was French). See, I know people are just people. Their skin or language doesn't matter (again, unless it's French). If he didn't have ID or I didn't recognise him/her I would politely decline and call a cop. Even if he/she was white.

This story is a very weird way to present a case, I must say.

But, that aside, and the seemingly slight jump in logical steps, i must say that race does make a big difference in society, and not just in the US.

But in the case of the US, I must say that if you're not caucasian, you are treated differently. Now, the level you are treated by others is just completely based on who you're interacting with. And, those who are in power set the ground rules for interpersonal relationships. Because we live in a historically white-dominated society, everything is based upon the reference point of a caucasian-centric society.

Those who say race doesn't matter really have to understand that naturally, a racial difference is an obvious catagorization that people see and base judgements on. To just even say "Just because he's _______ doesn't mean he is different from anyone else" is already a value judgement based on a difference.

Anyways, enough of my ranting

I think we stopped considering ourselves the melting pot of the world back in the 1930's

'melting pot' was a term used to assimilate irish and italian immigrants (they were the highest in number during the potato famine)..

people stopped assimilating because they didn't want to associate themselves with the baseball/basketball hot dog & hamburger ways of the US....

on china:
the entire world forced china .. and basically all of asia.. to gain access to their markets... America adopted the open-door policy in order to have a stake in china's economy, and not leave it up to the EU..

Japan was forced to open it's doors and lower trade barriers in the 60's because of globalization and market pressure...

that area of the world has a long history of being very closed to the outside world, sometimes even to each other...

they don't claim they are a melting pot of cultures and probably never WILL claim that....
*we* on the other hand do (or did)... and that is why we have to eat up all that crap... about being politically correct and catering to other cultures...

those were some of the fundamentals when this nation was formed... we are ALL immigrants tracing back mainly to EU... and the original people who mifrated here were highly oppressed and poor and starving because of the royal families...

That is so much horse ****! Nazism and Fascism are types of government based on nationalism and command economies. Next, not all skinheads are neo-nazis. That is a stupid blanket statement and deserves an immediate left hook to the jaw. I know a couple of motocross guys who you would immediately label as neo-nazis and skinheads if you met them, but in actuality that is just their preferred simple fashion. yes.. but Nazism relied on the destruction of the church.. people weren't allowed to have any form of religious bindings... because of one simple reason...

when you are at church, you are trained in social behavior... you learn how to speak to people, how to aggregate and solve problems, how to organize events, etc etc.. that is why most governments had a religious bases a long time ago... they add to the social basis of people...

If I were to say "I don't trust black people because they're all crooks" - I would be blasted by lots of people. Let's say that opinion is based on my experience and things I see on TV and read in the news. The opinion is still wrong, because the truth is that not all black people are crooks. This is exactly what is happening here. All you're seeing - and indeed, seeking out - are the bad elements of so-called "white society". It was white people that abolished slavery, or had you forgotten? Granted, it was white people that brought it to be in the first place, but the simple fact that white people brought about its end proves that not all white people are the same. The same applies for all people, regardless of race.

Every person on this planet deserves to treated as an individual, based on their own merits (or lack thereof). To do anything less just perpetuates prejudice, and thus violence in society. my mom talks with a THICK ASS accent... and was treated differently because of that....

this is more of a sexist thing... but if she were a white woman who spoke english with no accent.. they probably would have treated her (slightly) better.. but still would have asked for the man...

but... i have to admit something here...

i have noticed.. now that I am older.. and travel more... that the population is rapidly dividing into two general groups.... and I will speak of only WHITE americans here.. because that group is all that I have come in contact with and I can't claim anything for any other American group...

when travelling.. there are two types of people on the planes.. and I observe how they interact with the stewardesses.... the non-english speaking ones

Group A: cocky.. think they deserve to be treated like gods because they come from the 1st world and speak english... usually end up throwing a slur about the english spoken by the stewardess to his/her friends after the person leaves...

Group B: really nice... often funny people.. who have a good time.. don't feel HIGHER than anyone else.. and actually try to interact with the locals (on the airplane)..

group B far outnumbers group A.. but this is only a recent thing...

I have been travelling since I was 40 days old (moved from uruguay to california at 40 days).. and I travel at least ONCE a year... so I have come in contact with MANY MANY people.. and I can make this generalization with 21 years of experience (of course I don't remember all the 21 years)....

you are not one of the people i have a problem with...
unless you fall under the category of having power and abusing it ...

and... i'm sorry to inform you.. but a MAJORITY of the people who hold power in corporations, MNO's, NGO's, and in government **are** white....

before america, colonialism existed... making all of EU the WHITE people... abusing their power for money .. enslaving, raping, burning, and destroying civilizations...

then .. you get into the early 1900's ... Spanish-American war.. BOTH I consider to be the WHITES... because both caused major disasters.... i don't remember the island's name right now.. but they fought for their independance from BOTH Spain & America.... and LOST.. many lives were lost.. philipines (sp?) !! that was it..

so.. lets fast forward to WWI .. where were we? no where.. until the WHITE people decided that who ever controled EU controled EU markets... and thus.. it was for the benefit of US ECONOMY that we interviened.. not because someone actually gave a damn about what happened....

so.. WWII comes along... did the US care when all those jews were killed? not really... if they did.. they would have interviened WAY WAY earlier.. and not wait until ENGLAND was the last standing western EU country... NOT controlled by hitler....

I wouldn't be surprised if the US knew about pearl harbor.. i've heard the theory that they knew about it.. and let it happen.. because FDR needed support from the people to get active in WWII...

It sounds easy. Move into any position of power and you will become white. This is easy. I like generalizing. The argument started because stupidzbu said that white people will kill each other to get a job while latinos would share the money. Now it is about colonialism and the oppression of nations. Steven Jay Gould wrote a book called Guns, Germs and Steel. He was trying to figure out why populations on different continents followed different paths. Perhaps if native americans had reached the population density of europe they would have moved out into the world conquering. Then I guess I would not be white in the context of this discussion. You are correct. I apologize. The simple fact is you are welcome to your beliefs, but it gets rather annoying to those of us who fall under the heading of white used by society. You seem to have an interesting definition of white. I can say I am afraid of latinos and then change the definition of latinos to only be the illegal immigrants or whatever. It does not make my statement any more palatable to the individuals that fall under the more common definition of latino. I guess the moral of the story is colonialism is bad, oppression is bad, and generalizations are bad.

stupidzbu, i heard that in WW2, we let ourselves get bombed because if we defended, the japanese would know we had their codes. And i think most of the reason you think white politicians are so bad is cause you live in america. Im sure theres corrupt politicians in other parts of the world. Take mexico... is there any police force and government more corrupt than good old mexico?

you are right... Mexican police are VERY corrupt...

but now you have to bring in a theory of relativity.... (thank you einstein!)

Mexican police are corrupt relative to US police....
And the Mexican government is corrupt (arguably) relative to the US gov't ....

but... if you take into consideration the way the Mexican Gov't is... it makes sense for the police to be the same way.. they are both corrupt... hence.. they follow the same guidelines... neither one tries to claim that they are legit..

as soon as a mexican officer gets you.. he sticks his hand out waiting for the bribe... just like the politicians...

but.. in america.. it is a different story.. our police and politicians pretend to be on our side.. pretend to do things for the benefit of US.... and are appalled by corruption... disgusted by drug use and prostitutes...

Condit is a perfect example of this... when the clinton fiasco happened.. he stated something like 'the truth needs to be told to solve this issue' .... he needed THREE interviews with the police to get SOME info out.. and his interview with connie chung was an embarrasment to him.. he lied constantly.. made up things requested by the leevy family... and refused to ANSWER questions.. instead just wanted to get HIS message through:
"i have been married for 34 years"
"I will respect the leevy families request that I not talk about that"

etc etc etc ....

he is a hypocrit... because he came out and talked all that trash to clinton.. yet is doing stuff WORSE than clinton..

also.. on cops... not all cops are corrupt.. but they do have circles.. they do hush things up... and they just try to find ANYONE to blame for a crime..

i know this first hand..my best friend spent 3 months in juvi with murder charges.. because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time... and they just wanted to blame him for it...

turned out he had money and could defend himself.... but imagine if he DIDN'T have the money for the lawyers!! he would STILL be rotting away in jail.. for no reason whatsoever!!

why? because if he is a nobody.. nobody cares.... and the people can be convinced that they are being 'protected'... when really they aren't ....

why do you think USA has a problem with kids & guns?? violence.. rape.. sexual offenders.. and the like?
cause... americans tend to 'pretend' that everything is fine and dandy.. they don't want to deal with anything and scapegoat their problems on the media.. games.. etc...
