View Full Version : Columbia House DVD deal
A lot of people have spent time listing Dvd's and deal codes. the best code that I have seen only applies for old members coming back, or so they would like you to believe.
If You call CH (DVD) 1-888-242-3837 you can use any code. Just tell them your friend told you the code. DO NOT MENTION THAT IT IS LISTED HERE!
The best code that i have seen is "7CY"
You have to call if you are a new user or the online form will not let you sign up becuase you need some old account info.
With this code you get 5 DVD's at $0.49 and the optional at $14.95. You are then obligated to buy 2 more at the base price of 19.95.
So if you do it correct and research the big DVD's taking the expensive ones first and the 20 dollar ones last you can get 8 DVD's for around 70 bucks.
Always looking for new and better codes so if you know any post'em!

How can you determine a DVD's price prior to signing up? Columbia House's Web site allows you to search for DVDs, of course, but their prices are hidden. I have a long list of DVDs I want but can't figure out which are the cheap $19.95 jobbies that I should save for later ...

krazie662 -- I'm not a member of their DVD club but I've dealt with Columbia House before. It's a pretty straightforward deal; if you want the details you can read about it on their Web site. Basically you get 4 for something like 49 cents but you're obligated to buy another 4 at full price. The only hidden fee is the shipping / handling fee, which can run up to $12-15 per shipment. Clearly the best way to offset this is to minimize the # of orders placed (i.e. buy the last 4 DVDs with a single order)
The DVDs wind up being about $10-15 each, depending how you play the game. For me, the only tricky thing is figuring out which are the expensive DVDs for the first 4 and saving the cheap $19.95 discs to actually pay for.

"Regular Club Prices" are usually higher than the ones at e-tailers or places like Best Buy and Wal-Mart. That's the only caveat I have found so far.

im a member and joined when the had the buy 4 for 0.49 and had to buy two more w/in a year, but you could buy 1 immediatly for half price and then only have to buy one. the last one i bought was american pie ultimate edition, which, w/shipping was $26.24, vs about $20 in stores. basically, ive gotten 6 dvds for about $40. its a pretty good deal imo...but i havent tried to cancel yet.

I;ve done it too. In the long run, it's a great deal, but I still have 3 DVDs left to buy, each at regular club price. That's $60.
I had one small problem with them. I had ordered some videos for a "special" price and at checkout they were counted towards my total required to purchase (the 3 remaining). I bought one at $14.95 and two at $6.95. It sounded like a sweet deal to close out my account. Oh no. I got a letter from them saying that they were "unable" to process my order and that it was cancelled. I called them back and argued with the CS rep for 15 minutes. They finally said they would sell them to me but that they wouldn't count towards closing out my required purchases. I could've got 3 for about $30 plus shipping, but that's not really much of a deal. Finally I said forget it and that's why I still have 3 left to purchase AT FULL CLUB PRICE. They always get you in the end.
I guess using a one-time CC number would be great because they couldn't charge you the remaining balance if you want to cancel. I tried talking to multiple CS reps to cancel my account without buying 3 more, but no luck. THey get militant sometimes! The one-time CC number you be a nice big f**k you to them when they try to charge you again. Then again...that might get on your credit report. Anyone know if they can do that?

Ive done this many times.
You just have to remember to buy youe fullfillment titles, at the 19.95 or above price. if its under 19.95 it wont count. Plus certain dvd do not qualify, and the new releases do not count initially.
Then cancel your account.
ANd about your credit report question
If you don't fulfill your obligation, they usually charge what you owe. If they contact a collection agency, that shows up on your credit report, and will affest you.

go to dvdtalk.com and read up on forum for dvd clubs
They tell you whats available, and popular enrollment items, and prices. You have to be a member to view prices on the columbiahouse site

if you order over the phone w/ a rep, can you ask them if the dvd that is in question fullfills the contract agreement? They won't be that shady and lie to you right?

i don't think the CS reps are shady and stuff...they're more clueless than anything...but that's just a couple of them.
Most of the CS reps are good and know what they're talking about. However, some are just mean. Just hope you're lucky or just call back and try again.

I also agree with gear02
The cs are helpful but are sometimes ignorant
I have asked them to check enrollment and fulfillment status. Also have called and asked about movies that they have, but are not either available onlinr or in their catalog
Everymonth, the catalog they send, the items that are not available for fulfillment has an asterisk by the price

Columbia House can be helpful. All the mess that I posted above was with their VHS VIDEO CLUB. Soon after I decided to switch to the DVD club and they did it instantly with no problem and no fees. I thought the might make me buy more, but my account stayed the same, now I just get DVD mailers.
Also, one thing to remember when you sign up is to call CS and tell them NOT to send you DVDs automatically. They send you cards and if you don't want the "director's selection" for that month you send the card back marking the NO box. Well, if you forget to send it back or complete it online, they send you the DVD automatically and charge you. If you call them and say you don't want stuff sent automatically, they send you the cards but you do't have to do anything with them. This saves a lot of trouble.

Can you set your default to "don't send this month's feature" with Columbia?
I used to have the CD club ones and hated having to send things back when I forget to respond.
