Hello I'm planning to buy a playstation console in the coming month. Anybody know of any cheap deals? I've seen it for as low as 90 bucks for a new console. I guess a used one would be fine if worse came to worse.

for another $40, you can get a sega dreamcast. actually, you should be able to find a playstation for around $50-60 with coupons etc.

Why bother? If you waited THIS long to buy a psx (it's been out for 5-6 years), just wait till October 26th..that's the official launch date of PS2, and that plays normal psx games as well. I've had mine for a couple years now, if i had time to play it it'd be cool, but I don't have much time (however i'll never sell my psx..it's a keeper).

Everyone's saying wait to buy the PS2,
because its backward compatible....but......does it play the games *ahem* 'modded' stations do?....
I'm only saying this because almost everyone here has a 'modded' systems with similar games. BTW Dreamcast has Bleemcast!...if you wanna fork over some more cash *sigh* so much money

If you're going to buy a PSX, your best bet is to buy a dreamcast + bleem emulator coming out june 16th. Starting June 4 dreamcast will also have a $50 rebate for a new system.
Buying a PS2 INSTEAD of a PSX isn't a very good option unless you want to lay down another $240 bucks(PS2 US release price($299) + memory card($30)) than a PSX1 costs.
rumor is the PS 2 won't be able to play copied PSX1 games anyway... you know how anal sony is about these things.

yeah being able to play copied games is definitely important for all of us poor students. And what the hell is the BLEEM EMULATOR?

Bleem is a playstation emulator for PC's so you can play PSX games on your computer. You can find it at game stores or at www.bleem.com (http://www.bleem.com)

They are releasing the PSX emulator in "packs" for the dreamcast starting june 16. Each pack will support about 100 different games and will retail for $19.99.

Well since pointclick gives you 10% off all purchases, then this should qualify since this is a rebate offer. In fact I tried this myself( bought some other stuff too ) and they credited my account. It actually makes since if you think about it.

I understand the new 9000 series doesn't allow copied games. So I'd like a 7000 series machine with two controllers and a memory card and modified if possible. I was hoping to spend about 50 to 60 bucks. Is that possible? But sorry to get everybody excited, but I was thinking about getting it in a month or two. Just wondering how much it costs. I'll tell everybody again when I'm about to get it. thanks for everybody's input.

I can't wait till the BleemCast hits! I heard all the PSX games played on the Dreamcast will be even better and faster!

BleemCast games supposedly look near graphical quality of most dreamcast games.

Playstations with numbers from 1000-9000 can be modded. Playstations with numbers from 1000-7501 can use game enhancers, which act like a external modchip, plugging into your playstation's external port. Sony wised up and removed the port from the 9000 series.

It'd be pretty hard to find the whole setup that you want for $50 or so. The controllers themselves would be at least $10 apiece, used, new $15-$20. I assume you want the dual shocks. Modding the console, if you don't do it yourself, could cost $20-$40, depending on how much the store wants to rip you off. Most people wouldn't sell that kind of setup for any less than $75. Check ebay, that's probably the best place to go for used.

As for bleemcast, its not as great as it sounds. Each bleemcast CD only plays 100 playstation games, not every kind of playstation game out there like the PC version does. They are releasing multiple bleemcast cds, but each one will cost ya$19.99. Bleemcast will play pirated games, but again, only games supported on that bleemcast cd. The coder for bleemcast made a stab at sony with that, stating that the only reason bleem wouldn't block out pirated cds was because sony wouldn't share their security info with him.

IMHO, you might as well get a modded playstation now, forget the PSX2 or DC. Also remember that a lot of PSX games are retailing for <$20 now, esp. the classics like MGS and FF7, so it really isn't so bad to buy games for it anyways.

Bleem for Dreamcast facts:

Plays 400 of the most popular/and or best games. Probably hardly any of the good games could possibly get missed out. I'm very sure most people own less than 30 games. Chances are, if the game is worth playing, it will work on Bleemcast.

It will tell which games work and which don't on the box.

Enhances graphics to a 640x480 resolution, while the Playstation and Playstation 2 both use the basic 320x240 res.

Uses the Dreamcast's PowerVR graphics chip to enable Full-scene anti-aliasing to remove a portion of jagged edges. The game will look much smoother. What exactly do I mean? If you play a 3D game, you always see that the 3D object is not perfectly smooth. FSAA helps towards making the edges disappear.

Another point. Works with the Dreamcast VGA box. The DC VGA box is used for playing games on a monitor, which is often preferred over a TV of larger size for certain types of games such as Resident Evil CV, or RPG's, and even most action games. . . The VGA box plays at a higher-detailed clarity than a normal TV or even an S-video TV plus it does it at 640x480 resolution.
