I'm a homebrewer, I'm thinking Brewmaster is one, and I know hoey222 makes beer, too. Wondering if anyone else around here is and if you've got any good recipes to share.

i do!

i rarely write down a recipe tho... i usually start with a papazian recipe and then ghetto it up a bit.

i just went to all-mash recipes, which is a pain but worth it, and also switched from bottling to kegging, which is soooo much easier.

oh, and my 2 bits worth: CASCADE HOPS SUCK. that is what's wrong with every nasty seattle beer. yuck. anything else is better. cascade hops will ruin a perfectly good beer.

ever brewed your own cider? that is the best. get unpasteurized fresh cider straight from an orchard... mmmmmmm...

and mead. i did write down my recipe for that, and it kicked butt.

Donnie is wanting to get into it big next year when we get a house. Moving that stuff around is too much. He, supposivly, is a direct decendent of a brewmaster for the English royality.

I love ciders! That would be great to make.

then can someone explain to me those beer terms?

I'm not really a drinker...but I hear...'choice hops' and whatnot on commercials...just wondering what they are...

hops are these green, flowery things... they add bitterness, aroma, and some flavor. there are many varieties... saaz, cascade (blech), tetnanger... that are all a little different, but it ain't beer without hops (or something similar, like hemp or rose hips...)

I'm a homebrewer as well. My attempts at making a banana nut beer failed though :(

However, the amber cerveza was excellent!

good oddities:

watermelon beer - my god it was good. one of my friends did it.. and it was like biting into a fresh watermelon.
pumpkin beer - just a touch of pie spice... mmm....

nuts are tough. the oils get bitter or sour. i haven't figured out a good way to do it, beyond adding a cooking extract.

i stay away from lambics. it always sounds like a good idea, but the results have been not so good - too strongly tangy.

as for bananas... i remember an attempt at a banana/potato hardcore malty something... it smelled like diseased piss and never touched my lips. baaaaad...

Personally, I can't wait to make another batch of oatmeal stoudt. The batch I made last fall came out very well. I'll post the recipe once I dig it out.

mmm... if i get it in the carboy now, it'll be ready in time for winter... i looooove oatmeal stout.

the keg currently holds an ipa with cascade hops and based on how little i need to act like an idiot, at least 9% alcohol, which was an oops. we sat down and realized that my genius husband put in double the amount of grain we wanted.

Eventually I will be a homebrewer, but I have to get a home first. I don't have the space to brew here in the dorms at UCLA. I've been looking at some fun sites about homebrewing for a while though. I kinda want to try some of their stuff too. http://www.beersmugglers.com/

How didy'all get started? Did you buy a book or something? I was thinking about getting homebrewing for dummies.

Although I'm not brewing, I'm still the BrewMaster and I I LOVE DRINKING BEER.:cheers: :thumb:

If anyone lives in LA or is passing through, you have to go to the Yardhouse. (http://www.yardhouse.com) They've got 250 beers on tap. Thet sell beer by the yard (58-62 ounces), the half-yard (38 ounces) or the pint. I have yet to drink anything but a pint there, but soon, oh soon. The view of the bar makes me lose my breath. Also, check outthe Library Ale House in Santa Monica on Main street. The have a nice selection of 29 beers on tap plus many other bottled beers. No cool yard glasses though.

I started out with a few books and a kit that I found at a local Party Source store. I make 5 gallons of beer at a time, which will fill approximately 48 bottles. It's very tough to be patient the first time you brew your own beer, but if you get enough empty bottles, you can rotate them and have homebrewed beer all the time!

if you want to make homebrew, there is only one book you must buy:

THE NEW COMPLETE JOY OF HOMEBREWING by CHARLIE PAPAZIAN

i'll bet you could find it cheap at half.com - all other books are crap. this one gives you exactly what you need, clear, concise instructions, and if you wnat to know more, it's there, but in separate sections, so you don't have to read about advanced techniques until later. it is also full of enough recipes to keep you happy for years, and a guide to designing your own recipes.
