Avatars.... Or Galaga Badges... Or both?

Well, I finally found a galaga hack and it looks quite nifty. For those of you who don't know, our forums were originally using the Galaga badges and people seemed to like them a lot. When we switched over from UBB to vBulletin, there wasn't a Galaga hack for VB. Well, now it's here and it looks great!

Problem: I think it would be too much to have both Avatars and Galaga badges. Not to mention the bandwidth issue. What do you guys think?

Yes it looks very nice with both. The Galaga badges give a sense of rank, and the avatar adds a flavor of identity. I think they are both equally important and should all be used.

Perhaps we could also change the rank names a bit.

here is a possible ranking:

< 250 = total newbie
< 1000 = wannabe
< 2150 = shows potential
< 5000 = board stud
> 5000 = hapoo!

Why not just add rank badges to the availabe avitars? Just make them available only to peeps with a minimum number of posts. 500 posts for a Lt. Commander, 1000 for a Commander etc...

If bandwidth is an issue if both avatars and the Galaga badges are used, the avatars can be disabled in the options menu of them user control panel.

Galaga Badges may be hokey, but their uniform, unlike the avatars. the avatars are far from uniform. They give the forums a feeling of chaos. I'd prefer those hokey badges any day over avatars.

I brought this up to Leon, but I think if we continue to use avatars, they should be unique to each person. He said it can be done, and it could be automated, but then there's the problem of trolls coming and posting pr0n or offensive pics. Kinda hard to police it 24/7, although I volunteered to help.

The option to view avatars is already in place. I'm sure that using the code for this option, one could also create a hack to disable viewing the badges as well.

its real simple... see the littke BMW logos in my sig? remember my Gerbil image (the one that my avatar now) and Hapoos logo, and others.... well, those run off a thingy called a WEB server, run by me, for me, and whomever i deem worthy of its services :D

you could always start your own little server if you have a broadband connection, although its against the TOC...

well, i installed the update and now i see it...


ok heres the deal - for anyone to be able to see the image you want them to see in your sig, you have to have it available on a webserver, somewhere in teh world. you cant just have it on your harddrive and everyone else see it. it doesnt work that way.

most images on the web are .jpg or .gif. All the animated images (excluding flash etc) are .gif files.

ok, heres the files... if Leon is nice enough to add them (or one of them) to the avatar list for ya, you'll be able to use it.

The problem was that I have no creativity with names. I would spend hours trying to think up a good name. When I finally got one I liked, I would use it for a couple of weeks and then decide that it sounded dumb. After years of this, I finally said, forget it. I'm just going to use "Leon". I am not quite sure how you setup your avatar's, but I suggest if possible to just group them with the sig's and set a common limit for both. I like to change my sig's at random, so I would rather not have smaller sig's. As for an Avatar, I am /dev/null and in the linux world that means nothing hence the reason for not having an Avatar. I liked the Galaga Badges when I first started. Kinda helps tell you who the serious posters are. Well with the exception of Hapoo who doesn't really work at his job but instead just posts messages all day. Then again, some people call that dedication, loyalty. If we can't have both, I would choose the Galaga Badges. Besides, I have a fast connection so there is no Bandwidth issue with me.
