Nope. Actually sharks sometimes eat dolphins.

Dolphins kill sharks too. Dolphins will swim at top speed and ram a shark in the side. This causes internal injuries and can kill the shark.
They don't like each other much...

Yes Dolphins and Porposis (sp?) do in fact scare sharks away. Having surfed for 16 years of my life this is a fact I am well aware of. The mammals pointed beak is used as a ramming mechanism and the fact that sharks can only move on an even plane enables the dolphins to circle underneath the shark and puncture the sharks belly with the bottle nose. When I use to pull dawn patrol it was always a good sign to see schools of dolphins in the water as we knew there were no sharks within about 300 yards. Also research divers often use tame dolphins to guard against sharks.

I think the high-pitched shreeks of dolphins also stimulate the dorsal nerve of sharks, causing them to swim away from the source. If you don't know what that is, check a biology book for fish anatomy.
Dolphins aren't all that nice either.
Yeah, flipper's a big bully. Didn't you know that?
Here's in interesting fact though, great whites can swim straight up (they're the only sharks to be able to. That's the main reason they're such effective seal eaters compared with other sharks). They're also the only shark to be able to regulate its body temperature.

Also why you see those pictures of them breaching out of the water like whales do. Kinda scary to see a huge great white coming completely out of the water to grab a meal. :bawl:

Dolphins are pretty smart. I think they know that we steal their tuna herds (dolphins herd tuna for food in case you didn't know) and kill dolphins all the time (even if by accident). Maybe after a few decades of being careful not to bother them and if we leave their herds of tuna alone they will warm up to us.

Another little known shark fact:
Many people think that sharks are constantly swimming around because they are simply eating machines - all they do is eat and swim. Well, this may be partly true, but sharks MUST be swimming constantly or they will sink! :wow:
They are so muscular and heavy that they are not bouyant enough to float while stationary. Most fish, on the other hand, have an inflatable swim bladder that regulates their bouyancy.

Don't they also have to keep swimming to keep a constant flow of water running through their gills?
On a side note: do sharks acutally sleep? If they do they they probably go to the bottom and just lie there?

It used to be thought that sharks needed to keep swimming to breathe. But that was found to be untrue. Sharks do sleep, they lie on the botom and rest.
One of the benifits of living in San Diego is that I get to go to Seaworld frequently as I have a year round pass.

Not true they have found several caves where sharks sleep, it's an unexplained phenomenon
also dolphins do scare sharks away and have been known to kill them, they also save humans when they are attacked by sharks, there were many accounts of that

Actually, one recommendation I have heard is that if you are being attacked try to punch them in the nose, as they have loads of nerves there.

I think getting out of the water and dropping in a depth charge would work better.

Old news but still sad.

Personally, I don't believe that sharks simply are scared of dolphins, I think they just don't get along. So they are known to fight each other. Kind of like Great Whites and Killer Whales.
Just because you are swimming with Dolphins doesn't exactly mean you won't be bitten/eaten by a shark. I guess it also depends on the shark. I highly doubt dolphins are stupid enough to mess with a great white shark.

They check the picture on the pass. You would have to look something like me to get in.
Sounds like we need to find a SeaWorld deal for you.
Ya definitely need to find a seaworld deal for me. I can't believe how much prices on theme parks have gone up. I remember when you could get in anywhere for $20 or less. Now it's in ecess of $30 to $40.
