Router and hub networking question

I have a cable modem and I need to network 5 computers. Unfortunately, I only have a 4 port router and a 5 port hub.

The router works fine. I plug a cable from the uplink port of the router to a normal port of the hub. However, I don't know how to get the settings right. The router has DHCP but the hub doesn't.

I tried assigning IPs to the computers on the hub, but that doesn't work. Any ideas?

It should be the other way around, plug the cable modem into the uplink port, and plug a cable from a regular port on the router to the uplink on the hub.

are you sure? I plugged my cable modem into the WAN port of my router...

and then uplink on router to regular on hub...

or regular to uplink on the hub...


it doen't matter it should work both ways..

and the computers plugged into the hub will still see the DHCP from the router.....

I think that's what I had. The problem is that my computer on the hub can't ping the gateway (my router).

heh NO you plug your connection from the modem to the WAN port then ur uplink takes care of your Hub. what kind of router is this each one has different setup situations

another wierd thing i have dhcp goin on my router even tho my cable comp doesnt support it :D

power on the router, then the hub, then the PC and try it again....

Look..I think I wired it right...DHCP should work through the hub...so basically, wire it it should take care of the rest...

Ok, when I did this with a linksys router and an old hub here is what I had. Cable modem to WAN on router. Regular port on router to uplink port on hub. That worked for me fine. If the Hub computer is still having trouble make sure the hub works. For example just hook a comple computers to it and see if you can make a little LAN. If the hub is working make sure the computer on the hub has recived and IP. In win98 (and others) go to run and type winipcfg and select the network card from the drop down menu. Make sure there is an IP there and that it is within the range being specified by the router. If there is no IP then renew all. If there is an IP that looks invalid, release all and then renew all. If none of that works than I have no idea :confused:

Try a cross over cable.
If you are already using one, use a patch cable instead.

no crossovers needed...the uplink port already crosses the wires for you.

ok...I got it fixed...I just unplugged the hub and let it restart...it then picked up immediately...heh
