View Full Version : Bush hurts workers AGAIN! (by supporting the NFL against the refs)

Either he is the dumbest man alive, he doesn't care, or he truly is owned by big business (actually, I think it is all three!)
As you know, the NFL has been tough on the refs (locking them out, withdrawing their last contract offer, etc)
Now, Bush sides with the replacement refs and he PERSONALLY performs the coin flip for 10 games.

The Democrats should send him a thank you card. He has practically guaranteed Democratic control of the House and Senate and Bush's defeat in 2004.

Ok, but do you think crossing a picket line would help or hurt other unions?

The poll options are not complete. Don't post a poll unless you have balanced options. Troll polls suck.

As you know, the refs have been making ridiculous salary demands for a weekend job.

Who DOESN'T make big bucks in the sporting world? Figure that the average football game is total one hour duration per week actually playing on the field, multiply that times about a dozen or so games per season, and the salary rate per hour is incredible.
Even the hot dog vendors make a killing.
I am not trying to excuse the refs for wanting to make a lotta bucks, but it seems like everything in Football is bloated with excess.

I admit that most professional sports salaries seemed to have gotten extreme, however, you seem to be forgetting how many hours of mandatory practice, team meetings, etc., are required of the players besides the actual game time. However, if the players decided they were going to hold out unless their salaries are about doubled, I would say "more power to the replacements".

I don't want to belabor the point, but I know guys who are in bands who practice twice a week for many hours and who have meetings to try to straighten out everything, but they only get paid for the time they spend performing. No more, no less!

If you want to start comparing apples to oranges, I'll throw in a lemon. :) I know millions of salaried workers who put in expected overtime that aren't paid anything but their base salaries. But this has nothing to do with what was being discussed.

It's interesting that you mention bands.
I manage a Metal band - Doom Society - http://www.doomsociety.com/
When we discuss performance fees, I always take into consideration all the other time they spend. (ex. Two shows back-to-back will not be much more than a single show -- also taking into account potential ticket sales and demand. On the other hand, if they have to practice a lot because of the venue's specific demands, then they will have to be paid for that)
60 minutes in Madison Square Garden are certainly more expensive than 60 minutes at the local dive.
Getting back to the refs, it is in some ways similar to musicians. Some musicians have natural ability that allows them to practice only a little (just like some refs) and others have to work very hard.
Either way, it is PERFORMANCE that matters. One blown call, or one badly played note, and everyone is all over you. Therefore, whatever it takes to be great, you have to do--and you should be paid accordingly.

Yes, performance individually should count, but when you are in a union and you are negotiating with a contractor for your services, the union is the final authority. That's assuming the majority of the members have agreed with the union's stance on an issue.

The poll was a joke. I just added it because when I was editing and noticed that I listed some things in my first paragraph, they seemed to fit with the "poll" concept.
As far as "Xsiled" is concerned, personal attacks are always the best choice for people without any real arguments. Thanks for agreeing with me :heh:

I dunno....2000 dollars /game was their salaries before...and now they're gettin' a 60%+ raise on top of that...and they still complain. They're only part time workers....I don't even know how they got a union.
See what the unions did to Ford and United Airlines....

That's because, being musicians, they are self employed, independant contractors sell a service. So long as it is performed adequately no one gives a damn how much time they practiced.

No, trolls live under bridges and in swamps. Get it right. You will no longer be able to rely on ignorance as an excuse. You will have to admit to stupidity from now on.

Personal attacks are also the best choice for me. I do have real arguments, but why waste them on people who are just going to ignore them anyway? Might as well get in a few jabs and feel better...
The poll is an exceptional comentary on the way information about people's opinions are gathered by "profesional" polling organizations. It show the frustration TLG and many others feel about our non-existant control on the government that we are supposed to control. I'll say one thing about GWB, he certainly took the ball and ran with it! Unfortunately, I am making a baseball analogy and the batter is not supposed to steal and run off with the baseball...

And Trolls also personally attack someone. Lighten up, TLG is just voicing and opinion. And all the regulars should know that he's anti-Bush. If his posts are gonna piss you off this much, don't read them.

I've wondered about the Shrub and how much of his public life he is in control of. Do you think he actually made the decision to make the cointosses? If so, he's just dumb, if it was a decision his advisors made, they are either just as dumb, or are playing a fantastic joke. Either way, I'll put $$ on the elephants being out of office after '04.
