This just came out in an article today:
Despite popular notions to the contrary, Estes said, strangers committed fewer than 4 percent of all the sexual assaults against children.
Entire article - http://www.msnbc.com/news/626321.asp?pne=msn
What is interesting is that usually the BLAME and the WITCH HUNTS are aimed at the strangers
I think this should be read by a few more people. Very eye opening. *shakes head in dismay* very disturbing..

Anyone who molests a child should be tortured and killed.

What? That relatives and friends are doing the molesting? Seems like a pederast in the family is just as bad as one you don't know from a hole in the wall. :D

well, it might be easier on a kid to just accept the fact that some strangers are slime, rather than people that they once trusted.
does suck either way, tho.

Perhaps my point was not clear.
Things like "Megan's Law" and related laws that tell everyone in the neighborhood when a "sex offender" moves in are NOT very useful.
The problem is not the creepy guy down the street, it is Uncle Joe and Cousin Susie.
If your neighbor looks at you crosseyed, you immediately call the cops, but if mom is feeling you up, you tend to ignore it or explain it away.
There is no major need for a DNA bank of "known criminals" when the perpetrator is likely to be a family member or friend. You ALREADY KNOW who did it, it is not some unknown, random person.
Instead, many people's rights are violated just because it makes a cop or a politician look like they are being useful.

well, i think that letting the neighbourhood know when an offender moves in is part of the punishment. Truthfully, there is no punishment great enough for a sex offender / child molester.
Also, for those parents that arent feeling up their kids (like most DONT), then they can be aware of the possible threat to their children and be more carefull about who their with, or where they play.
In my book, Criminals dont have rights. They choose the relinquish their rights when the commit a crime. If its something they can pay for with jail time or repayment to the person the crime was comitted against (i.e. theft or something like that) then once the person has paid ther debt to the person they offended (i.e. jailtime) then they should be restored their rights, assuming they dont go and do it again.
just my opinionated $0.02

These two statements seem incompatable.
Sex offenders fall into many types, such as Homosexuals, those into group sex, those into animals, those who VIEW pictures, those who TAKE pictures, those who have consensual sex with someone unable to consent, those who have sex will family members, those who violently attack others, etc.
I can see that you might say that there is no way to repay violent rape, but what about viewing porn? If brother and sister who are of legal age have sex, then what exactly is the harm?
As far as paying your debt to society for other crimes, in certain states, like Florida, you lose your right to vote FOREVER. You also lose the right to bear arms, have a bulletproof vest and various other things too.

ok, by sex offenders i mainly ment child molesters, rape, un-consensual sex (same thing as rape?).
if siblings want to do the nasty, and they're legally allowed, and both consent, then it AINT NONE of my BIZness.
