Hi all you golfers out there. I need to buy one IRON club for practice. I'm looking to spend about $100 at most. Can you recommend me a decent iron for a relative beginner? It can be used (I've heard some good deals can be found on eBay) or new. I could buy a whole set of clubs, but I'll wait till I get better. For now it's just swinging practice. What is a good brand and model??? I'd like something that is decent and will last for a while.

thanks

If you're looking to buy one iron for 100 bucks, you can have nearly anything for that price. I have a set of Square Twos, which are a Ping knockoff (like a whole bunch of other brands) and feel great. I would go to a golf shop and swing a few different brands and check out which one feels best. Since you're just beginning, I would also suggest you start with a shorter iron (like an 8 or 9) to work on control and getting under the ball.

Id suggest buying some used clubs... youre a beginner so dont matter too much but ne ways buy like a driver, 5,6,7,9,putter or along those lines and go out to your local exec course to practice a little. But first spend a little time at the driving range or whatever so you dont look like a complete moron.:P

I have Ping red eyes, Mr.Melon has BIGGEST BERTHAS. If you ask me there is no difference. I STILL miss the ball.

I'd have to say anything that is used would be fine for starters...I would, however, recomend that you get a cavity club and not a blade...cavity irons are much more forgiving. Also, I'd agree with topane and get a shorter club for more control...Good luck!

Hey thanks for all the suggestions. Especially to Nanotech man. I tried that at the local driving range and I wasn't getting to much range. However, the large hitting surface helped me get more consistent contact. :D

I don't know what I was thinking people. I totally agree with all the suggestions to use a shorter club. Being the beginner that I am, I'll probably end up using about a 7 iron to get a better feel for accuracy. And I have no idea what I was thinking when I said $100. I've been looking at some Pings and Lynx's on eBay. I've seen some decent irons for about $30. I'm gonna try to go to a local shop and try different clubs first like topane suggested. I'll keep an eye out for those Square Twos.

By the way Fatass, how would I know if a club is a "cavity" or a "blade?"

A "cavity" club has, well, a cavity in the back. Most modern clubs are made this way. Look at the back of the club here (http://www.gigagolf.com/cgi-bin/Web_store/web_store.cgi?product=MI-GGCW03-SET&sourceid=ind_Best_Seller_MI-GGCW03).

wilson, and maybe a couple other companies, makes a fat shaft club that is great for beginners. the shaft is thicker, making the club easier to swing, and more accurate. you may lose some distance, but at your level of experience, you arent going to need to hit it long sicne you cant hit it straight.
personally, i have ping zing 2 irons, i use a black dot, which only means that i am taller or shorter than someone else who uses a different color dot. these are excellent irons and have been widely used on the various pro tours. ping has a great program where they will custom fit your club or clubs for like $5 at the factory, you cant beat that.

go to any golf shop and they usually have used clubs for sale. What part of the country are you in?

cavities have just that on the back of the face...

go to callaway and look at their irons... all of them are hollowed out on the back

blades are much harder to hit. If you find a picture of the ben hogan apex irons... those are blades.

Personally I use Taylor Made Super steels... cheap relative to others and good feel.

I am a 15 handicap

Go get a 7 iron and definitely a cavity back. I personally like my Mizuno MP-14's, they are one of the best blades I've ever hit. Oh and I just got the Taylor Made 360 driver. . . holy $h!t balls that is an awesome club. My distance has gone up at least 25 yards and my average distance is at least up 30 yards since I'm on the fairway all the time now.
