The events of this day have left me shaken, as I know it has all of you. I'm one of the lucky ones - my friends in NYC are safe. I live in an area that is low (I hope) on a list of potential targets.
I'm fighting a massive headache as I write this, and I am unable to sleep. There is no new information on TV, but I have it on anyway to keep from feeling alone. I can find no solace in my music tonight, as I so often do. I've given into the tears twice, and a third threatens.
I've been to New York City a few times in the last few years, and it is a city that I love. I still plan to try to spend some time living in Greenwich Village. I was amazed at the life and vitality there during my most recent visit, only 7 weeks ago. I used five rolls of film during a trip in October 1999, and in looking through those pictures tonight I feel part of the despair and resolve that the citizens of New York, indeed the entire country, are feeling on this day.
This is really hard. I am filled with despair and uncertainty - but I do know this: We will not be deterred. We will persevere. We will find the people responsible. We are stronger than this. We are bigger than this. We are better than this. We will prevail.
Never forget this day. Do not let your children forget this day. If we do, if they do, then we will have learned nothing.
