I believe it's illegal to cover your license plate in California. Even if it is just a plastic casing.

There are sprays that claim to do the same thing. I don't really understand how a spray would work though. But I've heard good reviews about them.

prolly based on the way the material in the spray bonds to the surface of the license plate. when everything bonds and lines up correctly, then you get the magic dissapparing act.

The clear plastic "lens" that covers the plate is probably illegal, but it's clear and not noticable so you probably wouldn't ever get caught with it unless for some reason a police officer inspects your license plate from really close. How often does that happen? It's already being used widely in Asian countries where radar cameras do most of the speeding ticket work already. It was all over the news this summer. And since it was, cops may start looking carefully at people's license plates.... conclusion: don't do it.

I've seen lots of people with this one and some after a while turn a disgusting old yellow plastic color. I'm not sure if it is the same product, but it seems to be a piece of crap :)

Yeah according to the story on the news, they work perfectly. They showed the shot that the speeding camera took and the license plate just looked BLANK!! But I just noticed a car yesterday that had it on. It had turned all brown and greyish and really noticable as UTMemo mentioned. So probably not a good long term investment.

and i quote:

The lens is laminated to a polycarbonate plastic, a bulletproof and
durable material, guarenteed not to embrittle or turn yellow upon aging.

so most liely the cars you saw had a cheaper versions of this product
