I recently purchased an Asus A7M266/AMD 1.33 MHz mobo/CPU. After fixing some initial hardware issues, I installed Windows 2000 Professional. System booted up wonderfully, no problem. However once I tried installing peripherals such as the Modem and Sound Cards I had problems. The modem is apparently not on the Microsoft compatible hardware list. While the Soundblaster Live card is listed, everytime I try to install the board the system hangs and does not enter Windows.

I want to use Win2k because of it's reported stability, etc., but if I can't use these devices, I am out essentially $300 or so, the cost of replacing the boards with compatible devices. I got the modem to work ONCE last night by changing the COM setting to COM2 from COM3. This only worked once and it I could not repeat it. I believe this is a software issue, but am at a loss to what to try next. Any suggestions?

well, the initial release of win2k had lousy driver support for those things. Sounds like you are in serious need of running windows update...which you can't do if you can't get the modem working. I'd try to run the modem as a generic, then run windows update before adding sound. Also, make sure you download the latest, win2k drivers for those devices before you install them as well.

The modem should work as a standard 56k or whatever.

Some pci slots share irq's. Did you try soundcard in different pci slots?
