Whats your most favorite example of architcture.

You can choose anything from any time...

A few of my favorite places has to be.... The Palace at Versaille
http://www.castles-france.net/versailles/images/water4.jpg

and The Flat Iron Building.

http://dippah.homestead.com/files/68.jpg

The Castle at Versailles is a great example of Classical architecture in France...Athough the inside is mainly Baroque decoration...the outside facade commands respect from its onlookers.

The Flat Iron Building has been a passion of mine since the first time I saw a picture of it...It was the first sky scraper in NY, and is a beautiful building to look at...I think you'll agree...

I think the originator of the thread was referring to the building in the background, not the statue in the foreground. :P

I work in Aurora and there are a number of developments going on in the area. I just wondered if that was in one of them.

If you look at the info under my name, you'll notice that I am in the Chicago area. Does that give you a hint: :) I know that there is also an Aurora that is a south burb of Denver.

mont saint michel. it's cool cuz the water comes in right up to the city walls at night, and it gets really misty, so it looks like you're on an island in the middle of the ocean, and then the mist burns off and the water recedes in the morning, and the sheep go out and graze...

I think Fallingwater is one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
Its actually cantilevered out over a waterfall.

here's some cool pictures (http://www.duke.edu/~cww2/archpic.html)

Besides that, though I'm not much of an architecture freak....I remmeber being fascinated by a house that was made out of wood, using no metal (i e nails, bolts) - so it was done by joints (but wasn't a log cabin type of thing either - it looked like they were popsicle sticks!!!)
and it was 2 floors...so, even the stairs were supported by wood and stuffs...
I thought that was pretty cool

most of my relatives are architects... and they all say that falling water is falling down - apparently some fairly major design flaws, and it takes a lot of money and effort to keep it together. i don't know if it's true or not, tho.

I think I like the waterfall better without the architecture. :)

they are doing major repairs to try to keep it from falling.
i still think its cool. it looks much niftier when you're actually there and walking around.

Great places guys. :)

I've actually been to the Palace of Versailles (sp?) and Venice myself (I think it was just before or after the carnival however). Both were very very amazing places for sure.

i have always wanted to have a waterfall outside my window... i think this stems from some dimly remembered fantasy story about a waterfall and fairies... i forget.

which brings me back to my original point. as soon as i make some money i'm moving to iceland... :P

yep. but it suits me perfectly. i like it cold, i like it barren and rocky, i like my summers mild, midnight sun/ midday darkness are COOL AS HELL, the language rocks, the culture rocks, and the horses are short enough that i can mount them without help. and ppl play bridge. generally the only way to play a game o bridge around here is at a senior citizens club, which would suit me fine, but they flat-out won't let me :( oh, and puffins and reindeer rule!

We're talking about architecture!!! :)

I think it's the best ballpark in America in designing for what it is..

Yeah, the waterfall in KC is nice, Arlington looks pretty, Coors, Camden yards, Arizona all look nice, and have cool things..

but specifically for baseball, PNC, IMHO, was really nicely architected (is that a word??? :) )

Well, since I usually go the a ball park to watch the ball game :), I think Wrigley Field has it all over the others. Wrigley can almost fit in the foul area of many modern ballparks, which gives you an idea of how much closer you are to the action.

PNC Park is beautiful. I got to stand on home plate before there was a home plate there. Watching the construction was fun. I only wish that I had been able to go to a game there before I left Pittsburgh. In terms of ballparks, my favorite place to go for a game is Fenway. I will be very sad when they finally get rid of it.

i think that my favorite piece of architecture would have to be the revered Old Run Down Shack by the Creek. A true masterpiece. I also hear the bum that lives down there built it himself.

Boldt Castle in the Thousand Islands..right between Ontario Canada and Alexandria Bay New York..this place is soooo cool, Still a work in progress, situated on Heart Island..A real tribute of love from a man to his beloved wife..who up and died on him during the original build..Once she died he left the island and never went back. The castle remains unfinished to this day, but to keep it in the condition it was in at the time of her death the workmen must keep the renovations up. Millions of dollars worth of marble, stone, lighting fixtures, brass fixtures, furniture, plastered wall decorations, mahagony banisters, woodcarvings for the fireplace hearths, etc sit unopened in straw filled barrels and boxes on the uppper floors of the castle. I was there for a wedding last october..it was unbelievable.
for more info on it do a search for BOLDT CASTLE.
