Wow, let me get this straight...You're a college "poor" college student and you have 1k to throw into your car for the sheer pleasure to ATTEMPT to out accelerate a Mustang?? How about putting that 1k in the bank so that maybe one day you can get the Corvette you wanted??
Just a suggestion...

is it a newer cougar? you're gonna have trouble out accellerating a mustang...especially the 8cyl flavor.
NOS is by far the best dollar for HP solution, but your car needs to be ready for it...i wouldn't throw NOS into a stock car.
also, for bolt on lightening, look for a supercharger or turbo...but you're not finding one for a grand.
don't know what to tell ya man...i have a 4cyl jetta and i'm not lookin to out accellerate anyone. yeah, i have it modded, and it's pretty quick...but i'm not gonna pick a drag race with a stang any time soon.
now a downhill race through a windy forrest road...then maybe ;)

oh and as for the vette...what will you do when you out accellerate a young man in a supra or even an integra (last issue of sport compact car had a 491hp integra) and he goes to his local www posting board to get tips to out accellerate a Z06...comes at you with a 800hp TT supra and blows your doors off...
time for a faster car?
i sense a downward spiral forming...be happy with what you have...no car will ever be unbeatable.

no i don't have a newer cougar it's a '95 8 cylinder 4.6L. I would not throw NOS in there for 2 reasons one it's illegal in NYC and second of all(main reason)... i don't want to be changing my pistons every 2-3 weeks.
And i like speed so i will be buying faster cars or modifying cars i own... what can i say i'm addicted

Sell the cougar. Buy an older civic and spend the left over money making it fast. You'll have a better chance.
I can't believe i just said that.

That's an extremely heavy auto with a puny engine. Forget it. It'll take thousands just to keep up with the Mustang.
Remember: Horsepower/Weight

Umm dude, he did not beat me by that much... i mean really give me just a bit more horseys and he would have been ded... DED :)
so keeping up was no problem it was the beating of him that was problematic
OH yea as darkfury said that engine is not puny at all, pretty damn good engine if you ask me

There are a lot of people getting around 400hp out of the older 2.3L Tbirds. Many are doing it pretty cheaply too! Also those were basicly the same motor as the Mustang SVO's and the later years were even slighly better since they went to 88 and the SVO's stoped in 86.

so how do they do it

3" downpipe, 3" single exhaust or dual 2.4" exhaust (that is a point of debate), ported head, gutted upper and lower intake, K&N cone, larger intercooler in some cases, increasing boost, dissconecting knock sensor, changing cam, larger fuel injectors, better computer, ported exhaust manifold, larger turbo, nos, etc.
They dont necessarily do all of that stuff, for example some are doing it without nos, that is just the stuff that comes up fairly often. The thing is these guys are doing it pretty cheaply, I think there are at least a few shooting for 350hp for under 1000. Most of this probably wont apply to your car since it isnt a 2.3 turbo but if you want to check it out... http://www.turboford.org/faq/mods.htm

The SC's are very cool cars. I dont know about moding them and stuff but stock they are pretty damn cool. I like the body style too.

dude i like that t-bird, i got no body kit on mine because some of the roads here will rip that fu*king thing off in a matter of seconds... on the other hand fu*k the body kit Kenas riped his friggin tail pipe off.

Dudes what's knock sensor?
And dark fury, if i would still go with the upgrade but couldn't afford a supercharger, what can i do for under a grand

oh yea anyone knows how i can find Tracks to get my timing in NY or NJ
Burzhui

dudes how often would one need to change his pistons if NOS is installed, and how much does that run
BADFlSH

That's a really nice looking bird Fury.
The knock sensor detects a knock :) which I believe occures when you run lean under heavy boost. If that happens it tells the computer to change the timing and back off a little so you dont do any damage. The thing is that the sensor is often fooled into thinking the car is knocking when it really isnt. So you just get an Air/Fuel guage to watch and dissconnect the sensor. I havnt tried it myself yet but supposedly its good for around 1/10 of a second.
Oh and I should probably change my earlier statement. I dont think there are "a lot" of people getting them up to 400hp but there are deffinatly a few. 350 is a more realistic target I suppose.

The '86 SVO had a 2.3 FI engine , turbocharged with an intercooler and it was rated at 190-195 HP. It was definitely a screamer, but to get an additional 200 HP out of that engine, it would take thousands; just like in the 4.6. 400 Horsepower at a low cost is impossible these days.
I had a 327-350 horsepower in a 68 Vette (which I still own) with a special cam, headers, 780 Holley and a few other mods and I was probably near 400 horsepower. It cost less than $1000 to do these mods in the Seventies.
However, if you truly want to take a 150-180 HP engine and try to get 400 HP out of it, it would literally cost a fortune. You may be able to use nitrous to get 100 HP, but the reliabilty would be very questionable.

Yeah, the SVO's are nice. I have an 86 that is pretty much stock. The 85.5 was the fastest rated at 205hp (all the ratings seem to vary somewhat depending on where you look). I can't say it as fact because as I said mine is pretty much stock, but there are several people at www.turboford.org that claim to have upwards of 350hp (I think more like 380 but I dont remember the threads so I will be a little conservative) for under $1000. Of course they are using a lot of wrecking yard parts like starion/conquest intercoolers ($40 or so at a yard where they are several hundred on ebay or well over 1000 for some new IC's) and doing much of their own work. There is no way to keep costs in that range if you have to pay someone to do the work for you.
To be honest with you Buzhui, I wouldn't spend my money on all that stuff unless you plan on going to the track with the car or something. And if you do then be prepared for things to go wrong, drag racing your daily driver is sort of living on the edge. Especially if you arnt going to be able to repair it yourself when things do break. If you really want to race that bad I would see what kind of car you can pick up specificly with that idea in mind. Something that is somewhat cheap to mod (relativly speaking) and that has a lot of stuff available. I know you already said you dont want to but that is really the way to go. That way when it breaks you still have something to drive. You also don't have to worry so much about the long term effects on your motor, just about your times :)
Do you have any pics of the vette johnny?

I have some old black and white pictures, but I don't have a clue how to post them. It's been sitting for twenty years. In it's day, it was one of the wildest looking Vettes in the area. It has a Mako Shark roof, fender flares and square headlights that I built myself. One of these days, I am going to start working on it again.
And Gasp, the engine in it now is a 327 225 HP out of a 68 Chevy.

well i hate civics but he would have a better chance selling the cougar buying a civic and spending money on it to get a somewhat fast car. Civics are very easily and cheaply modified and they are light where his cougar is heavy and doesnt have too many budget mods available for it. Can u think of any for under a thousand that would make it any faster?
