I'd tell you all about it, but the FBI says I'm not allowed to discuss it for another 10 years.
I believe money laundering is trying to "clean" illegal money by passing it through several different sources. As far as me, i've never been CAUGHT. I don't wanna say though, I think i'd get lectured on here ;)

Well, walking out of a store with a pack of unpaid chewing gum in my pocket was a classic (if only because when I noticed it, I ran back into the store). Damn it was hard back then to tell the store clerks that I had accidentally stole the gum.
Other than that, the best was when I managed to swipe a copy of a well-known graphics program off a computer with my Zip drive about 4 years ago. Surprisingly, it worked (and I never was caught at that one).
......of course now I own the program in question legitimately.

Money laundering is the act of "cleaning" money (thus the term 'laundering') by making illegally gained funds look legal through false business pretenses, or through the assistance of less than noble bankers. Not sure how the bankers go about it exactly, but I can give you a common example of the other type that you've probably encountered in your home city but never known about till now:
Let's say you're Vinny, and you're bringing in a million a year or so selling drugs, or prostitutes, or running a protection racket, gambling ring, or loan sharking, etc. You can't just put this money in a bank account somewhere, cause the banks are required to report such large accounts to the IRS. If you just splurge it on expensive houses, cars, and vacations, eventually that too will be tracked down by the IRS over time. They will become very suspicious at how you are able to get all this money and not pay any taxes, and an investigation will ensue, ensuring your illegal activities will be found out.
So, you work around this problem like this: you set up a nice little Italian restaurant outside town. You try and get a nice, cheap rent, and keep your costs down. You don't even care whether you really do much business or not, although it helps to do some, as the local police will become suspicious of a place that's always empty but never goes out of business. You then file your taxes for the restaurant like any business, but claim all the funds you made illegally as profits from the restaurant. Now all that money looks legit in the eyes of the authorities, unless they're really after you and scrutinizing the restaurant heavily, which they're almost never going to do as long as your paperwork looks ok. Sure, it means you'll pay some taxes, but that hardly matters if you're raking it in. Plus, businesses get all kinds of tax perks anyway, and you probably have a good accountant who can minimize your tax liability, as well. That in a nutshell is money laundering the old fashion way. There are many others, I'm sure, but you get the point.

Just for the record, I didn't mean to launder any money. :)
welfare, here's my story...
There's an ass in this story, let's call him Jay.
Jay emails me through the eBay "contact the seller" email thingy and says, "yo, my family needs to go to universal studios. If I paypal you 220, can you fatshoe (http://www.fatshoe.com) me 200? i don't have a credit card. if you can do this, thanks!"
So, being the dumbass i am, i go for it. It really seemed like an easy 20. I get the confirmation email from paypal that he sent the 220. I accept the payment. "WHOOO!," I think cuz my balance is reflecting the funds i received. I fatshoe him the 200. About 3 days later, I log into my paypal account, and it says the $220 transaction has been "RETRACTED" and my balance is like in -$160.
I later find out that Jay probably used a stolen CC # to send me that $240 and paypal had to take it back. Then paypal is like "yo, shiznittle! you did some hardcore money laundering. you owe us $160! you can mail a check to 123 paypal street. After you relinguish your debt, we'll reopen your account."
I never mailed them that money because, quite frankly, I don't have that much money. :)
