I'm going to the Olive Garden tonight for my birthday... Seafood Alfredo pasta.. YUMMMMMMMM...
And, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think sushi has raw fish. The stuff with the raw fish resembles sushi, but it's called something else, right?

Maybe I will be brave and try it when I get back to SD. Who knows where I would find it around here, haha. I like washabi sauce which goes on sushi I heard...I eat washabi chips from the health food store here all the time :) I like spicy stuff.

there's both sushi and sashimi, and they are both raw fish, and i believe the difference is in the presentation (the bed of rice, or something...)

there is this thing that i make, that i have heard called sushi, sushi rolls, nori, nori rolls, or california rolls. it involves rice with sushi vinegar, various vegetables, and a hunk of that imitation crabmeat (cold, but fully cooked) rolled in nori, or toasted seaweed. maybe that's what you were thinking about?

i like to many foods to have a favorite. i guess my favorite would be in-season fresh fruits... tomatoes, mangoes, peaches out'n the back yard...

Well, sushi is a generic term really. At least most people use it in that sense.

Sushi - seafood (raw or cooked) over a little rectangular-shaped chunk of rice.
Cut rolls - Anything shaped in a roll...like california rolls, rainbow rolls, etc...
Sashimi - plain old raw fish, sliced thin. (some don't do that but they should, it tastes better than in cubes) This is where I use "WASSSAABEEEE" a lot :) (I am guessing this is what you mean Twilight)
Rest - Your teriaki stuff, and all other cooked, fried japanese food.

I'm starving right now...:lick:

ps-olive garden is pretty good for a chain restaurant I must say :) by the way, Happy Birthday!! Have a couple bottles of wine for me!

argh. when people say seafood they usually mean shellfish. gag
As for the sushi, I dunno. Couldn't you get worms from eating raw meat? And I have never heard of cooked sushi. Oh wait yea I have. It's just called fish :P P.S. I don't like "fishy" fish either, another reason I prob shouldn't try it.

that's exactly why you SHOULD try it. sushi has no "fishy" taste at ALL. it's really cool. and anyone who knows what they're doing will not let you get sick off'n sushi - you're much more likely to get something from a no-hands-washin doofus at olive garden.

uncooked pork can give you trichinosis, which is the really bad "worms." uncooked beef can give you garden-variety food poisoning.

in europe, the problem is reversed; you can get away with undercooking pork, but you best roast the heck out of your beef if you don't want to die.

raw fish is bad if it goes bad, and it is easy to tell if fish is bad; unlike beef, you can smell it a mile away the minnit it starts to turn. as for fish parasites... there aren't any that i know of that will also infect a human host. there might be one out there somewhere, but they sure aren't common. so it's as safe as anything else. safer than raw vegetables.

now go eat some sushi and come back and tell us how much you olve it! :D

Most Indian food at restaurants is from Northern India which isn't very hot at all. Now if you look at Southern Indian food, that's another story . . .

I didn't know that...That's why I was always worried about even trying it...

FYI....not everyone eats sushi everyday in Japan. most people peole eat it once every 2-3 months for special occasions and such.

Nigiri= Rice wrapped in seaweed in balls or in triangle shapes. Yummy, you can get that at the 7-11 or AM/PM or Family Mart in Japan.

Sashimi= Cuts of fish AND from what I understood, ground up clumps of fish.

Sushi = Ball of rice with something on top, mostly raw seafood, sometimes including seaweed. Sometimes wrapped in seaweed.

"Rolls" are present in Japan, but they're otherwise pretty plain.

Most "sushi" that people eat in the US is an abomination of american tastes and culture, but are otherwise tasty nonetheless.

Best places to get cheap sushi in Japan is to go to supermarkets.
Best resturant I know of that's of decent quality is 100yen/plate (about 80 cents/ plate) sushi in Shibuya in Tokyo. Prices range from the cheap to the extreme though.

I like Sushi as well but you gotta have the big bucks to eat there more than once a year. I prefer good ol' Bertos Mexican food. Super cheap and plenty of it, although its a bit of a gut bomb.

Mexican is alright. The only problem I have with it its that is very heavy. Which makes me drowsy if I have it for lunch. Sushi is light and I always walk away with a smile on my face. Its expensive, but hey, since when did seafood become cheap anyway, right?

Working for a Japanese company (and two trips to Japan) has given me many opportunities to enjoy sushi and sashimi. I especially liked some of the company-sponsored dinners in Japan where they had trays full of both. I find I like sashimi better than sushi - tuna and salmon are wonderful. One personal favorite of mine is scallop sashimi. Sweet shrimp are also great.

Sushi is when raw fish or whatever is placed on pieces of rice. Shashimi is when it is just the raw fish without rice.

Well, here's the deal. Out here where I live in PA, we have Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish are also around. These groups don't waste anything. So scrapple is what happens after all the major cuts of meat are cut from a pig. They take the rest of the leftovers, boil them for ever, add seasoning (salt, pepper, other sundry spices), add some corn meal and cook it up. Then you pour it into a pan, throw it in the fridge to harden. From there, you take the scrapple, cut it into small slices, throw it in a pan (preferably a cast iron one with some oil) and off you go. As far as what exactly is in it...well it's not pretty. It's mostly hearts, tounge, livers and other stuff. I've heard recipies where you boil the head of a hog until the meat falls off. I just buy Haberset and do it that way. It's the best. Here's an old thread about it.. (http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=15940&highlight=Scrapple)

Actually, it sort of was. I was with my (Japanese) manager, and he ordered something for us. The waitress goes over to an aquarium, nets out a couple of small fish, and takes them to the kitchen area. Shortly after she brings us each a plate with the fish meat on it, and the rest of the fish sticking up on a skewer sitll kinda moving. I'll just say it was "interesting".
