It'll work fine for a while and then only go up and down.

Any suggestions?

Well, is this a ball or optical mouse? If ball, I have no idea. If it's optical, try blowing on the lense. Sometimes tiny little fibers get stuck mine and it moves like that. Also, lots of server/client Trojan's (for example: Sub 7) allow the "client" to access the "server" (you) and move the mouse around.

Have you done the standard "clean the rollers that the ball turns"?
