I just installed win2k on my computer and for some reason i cant access the properties of folders. when i select a single folder and try to open the properties box nothing happens. same if i click on the sharing command. this installation is less than a week old and i have been having the problem for a while now. does any one have an idea to what the problem is?

Try selecting the item and typing alt-enter. That should bring up the properties box. If it still doesn't show up, try using alt-tab and watch the names of the icons as you cycle through them. If the item shows up, perhaps the properties box has been moved off the screen.

i have already tried those ideas and neither of them work. i also cannot open some other programs such as iis and personal web server. i dont know what is going on and with such a new installation it hardly seems much can get corrupted in a week.

The IIS thing i mentioned before got me thinkin... maybe its one of those new viruses, even though im behind a firewall (i think i am because i cant get programs like audio galaxy satillite and netscape 6.1 installer) and a personal firewall (zonealarm pro 2.6) and i never ever check my email. or at least i havent in the last 3 weeks. well lo and behold i got nimda. so far it looks like only one file got infected and if it has effected my system it only hit my win2k partition as i dont really have much of a problem with win98se except that pain in the ass memory leak. anyone know if nimda can cause this kind of damage to win2k?

Here's info on the worm & how to remove it:

This one is partucularly nasty, because you don't even have to do anything to become infected except have IIS running. The only clue that I had it was that the send light on my DSL modem was on and I wasn't doing anything.

W2K installes IIS as part of the default install, so if anyone else is running W2K Pro and NOT using IIS, you should shut off the service and/or install the patch from Microsoft:

well, i had iis running, and i installed the patch, but i dont know if i did it before or after i was infected. i have already cleaned all the infected files, but since then i have lost access to the internet using win2k. i dont know what happened and have tried to reinstall everything. i cannot gain access to the internet, but i can get access to my workgroup. this is even more complicated since i cannot access the domain which houses my workgroup and some programs (such as sniffer) cannot access the nic and cannot even find it. but at the same time hardware manager reports that the nic is functioning proprely. and i have had no problems in my win98se partition so far. if these problems continue, i may just format my whole win2k partition and start over, though i will try to wait for a while and see if i can fix the prob.
