It is still possible that it was mechanical althought that sounds unlikely. The Israelis do not mess around with airport security. One of my coworkers was a security supervisor at one of the airports and she swears it could not have been a bomb. Sadly nobody is perfect all the time and CNN said that the plane stopped in Bulgaria although the next line had the Bulgarians disputing this. Sad no matter what.

If you've ever flown that plane, you'd know those things always seem like they're on the brink of blowing up. Flying one of these things in central china had me fearing for my life. I wouldn't be suprised if it went either way.

"Officials said it appears to have been an accident.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said terrorism could be the cause. But a defense official in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the land-based surface-to-air missile was fired from the Crimean region of Ukraine. Ukraine is the only country known to be conducting military exercises in the Black Sea area, the official said."

Now they're thinking it could have been a SAM.

It's only the U.S. saying it was a SAM. Everyoen else is denying it. I think it's kind of BSish for us to say it's a SAM. We would have bene mad if someone called the September 11th attacks an "accident." I don't know, just my 2 cents ;)

Yes, but let's not forget Russia and many other ex-Soviet republics have a history of lying and covering up their military foibles. They have confirmed that indeed the Ukrainians were performing missle exercises that day near the flight path. But the Ukrainians claim all their planned targets were hit, and they couldn't have knocked the jet down. I don't know what I'm ready to believe just yet.
