Here's a piece of advice for ya - if you're in the market for a laptop, get a decent one, not a knock-off. Go to Dell & look at the refurbs. They actually have some decent machines for cheap, plus a full warranty from a reputable company.

The tricky thing about laptops is that they're so proprietary. If you buy from a company that goes belly up or has really bad service, you're pretty much SOL if you have problems with your machine. When going with a name brand, you can at least get parts if you need to.

It's easier to get a desktop from some fly-by-night company, 'cuz if something dies, you can just pop it out & get a new part. On the other hand, if your LCD or motherboard on the laptop dies, you might as well chuck it in the trash if you don't have a warranty from a reliable company.

chiming in here...

i bought a few laptops for a company i used to work for...bought only dells and thinkpads...one of our reps went out and bought a umax piece of garbage and another had a winbook?...anyway, i spent more time doing 'favors' (ahem..repairs) for the owners of the winbook and umax laptop..never had a problem with the dells/ibms.

you get what you pay for...and that holds so true with laptops.

If I were spending my own money on a laptop, the only two I would even consider would be either a Dell Latitude or an IBM Thinkpad. You just can't go wrong with those.
