you bet your ascii i'm off! w00t!
we follow the gov'ment work schedule, so we get all these great holidays off.. it's especially nice in the winter because the gov is such a big employer around here that they'll let 'em off pretty easily if there's a threat of snow :)

the idea of columbus day makes me sick...honoring a man who enslaved natives...a man who 'discovered' a pre-inhabited land and raped and pillaged it for its resources and people...
obviously i have to work

I've got school. My father, though, a letter carrier (and no he hasn't shot anyone) gets it off.

actually, columbus himself was a pretty cool guy, and he just wanted to set up trade between the continents, learn about new cultures, and of course win fame and fortune.
the holiday, tho, pretty much just celebrates the fact that whitey ganked the land, so, yeah, the holiday sucks.

We Italians get one REALLY good day a year. Columbus Day. We don't get fall down drunk and stumble around telling everyone how much we love them, (St.Patricks Day), we don't need blinking lights, special songs, decorated trees, or make believe characters, presents or countdowns. We don't need Rally's,candles, excessive spending or days and days off. We get together with our families, MAYBE go see a tournament of bands parade, honor our elders with a nice family dinner, have a game of touch football in the backyard and raise a toast of homemade chianti to Christopher Columbus, and the generations of Italians before us who like C.C. came to 'discover' a new land. Any one who had or has relatives that lived or live in other countries and came here for freedom, religious,or otherwise should appreciate this holiday. I believe the name of this thread was...Does anyone get monday off..not let's bitch about the reason we GET it off. I am proud to be an Italian American. Long Live c.c.
Libertà, Classe, Uguaglianza!
Spain funded Columbus (http://odur.let.rug.nl/~usa/D/1400-1500/columbus/brf94.htm).
Portugal colonized what is now Brazil.
Do other countries in this hemisphere celebrate Columbus day (or something similiar)? You would think Latin American countries would. After all many Latin Americans are descendants of the Spanish conquistadors and settlers.

As far back as I can remember, we've never gotten Columbus Day off in Cali. I always figured it was because we're on the west coast or something.
We'll all be working, but banks will be closed on Monday. Gubment employees keep plugging along, postal workers must work, but bank tellers are sipping mai tai's? What's up with THAT?! :bawl:
