well, if you have and automatic, then its either the tranny (could just be LOW on tranny fluid!) or if you drive a stick, like real men ;), then its most likely the clutch (or really most likely the throw-out bearing in the clutch).

peace.

good call styleee!

Ford has had a lot of problems with their AOD ( Automatic Overdrive) transmissions. At least it's rear wheel drive. Expect to pay big bucks.
And if it were a manual trans, an easy way to tell if it's the clutch would be to start in third or fourth going up a hill. If the car won't move and the engine is revving, it's definitely the clutch.
A bad throwout bearing makes a lot of noise before they must be replaced. It definitely wouldn't have been that.

yeah, since you're like 20 years old, you've probably been drivin like the average young guy, and burned out your clutch. that sucks for you, you're probably looking at at least 600 bucks in repairs.

tell me more about this overdrive lockout? I have no idea what the hell that is

I've had transmission problems with mine... so I pretty much have already gone through what he was talking about.

Yea the 95 and 96 are the same, except that the bod is different

The "overdrive lockout" is that little button you have on your "T shifter" drive selector that says O/D. What this does is that if you are accelerating, it shifts the car out of 4th gear back down to 3rd for a "quick boost" in acceleration at highway speeds (you can run higher RPMs in 3rd gear with it selected)...

I also tend to use it to slow the vehicle down without hitting my brakes... however after having my transmission replaced... I am hesitant to continue that practice (now that the car is out of warranty)

OK i always called it overdrive..... so what you are saying is just leave the car in overdrive (light off) and don't turn off overdrive(lite on) until you really need it? I only use it when i am going up a steep hill at small speeds

i never use it in the city, i just turn the car on and go:)

God willing if parts are still available.. and if we still use gasoline, and cars don't start flying then you will be ok :D

Dudes quick question, so i turn on the engine drove around checked my transmission fluid... in hopes to find something on the measuring rod that says Full or Empty.... however it only has hot on one side and cold on the other side? How am i supposed to know if it's full or not?

dude, have you ever considered reading the owners manual?

it's this thing that came with your car, it is most likely in your glove compartment. you should check it out sometime, it might just tell you how to check your own transmission fluid.

duh

Burzhui

Nh i checked it but it's a friggin weird gauge, and yea i decided to look in the manual afterwards.. and i came to the same conclusion still... that being it's a friggin weird gauge.

When I had an 89 Lincoln Mark VII the tranny would shift into its fourth, it would slip, like it shifted to neutral. If I dropped the gear selector into D instead of OD, forcing the car to hold the third, it was fine. Try it, and that might get you by until you can get a new tranny (as that is what it needs if this is the case).

If you have to replace it try and find one out of a salvage yard (wrecked cars, good motors).

The salvage company actually sent me an older 4 speed aod tranny than what I paid for, and never asked for it back when they sent the new one. That being said, I have a four speed AOD that will mate up to a Ford 302. Its on a crate somewhere in one of my father's shops.
