As a professional skilled in the Culinary Arts, I can honestly say that the potato is my absolute favorite tuber. Its flavor, texture, consistency and ability to adapt itself to nearly any ethnic cuisine is simply unmatched in the starchy world.

I stand behind the potato without reservation.

Ah, potatoes. Gold from the ground. Those luscious lumps of flavor tantalize my tasebuds to no end. Baked, mashed, it doesn't matter. Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I have a potato. Celebrate? Party with potatoes. Sorrow? Potatoes lend comfort. O, mighty spud, I salute you for your versatility and taste. LONG LIVE POTATOES!!!

That's right, sorry should have made it clearer. But at that time were was no South of North America. Just one Materic.
Another historical fact: in the beginning a lot of people died from eating potatoes, because they were eating green sprouts, which were growing above the ground. (those who saw potato grow, would know what I am talking about ) They thought that was the potato (as we know it)

vodka , traditional spirituous drink of Russia, the Baltic states, and Poland; it is now consumed internationally. The best vodka is distilled from rye and barley malt, but the cheaper corn and potatoes are commonly employed. The high alcoholic strength of over 90% is generally diluted before marketing. A characteristic of vodka is that it has little or no distinctive odor or taste.

He's my two cents about hte wonderful spuds. "French fries" are actually NOT French. They're Belgian. Everyoen in Europe knows this, but since we speak French in Belgium, Americans have given them the misnomer of "french fries." We just call them fries in Belgium (frites). Oh, and to enjoy them the most, eat them with mayo. MMMmmm....I love mayo.

There's the possibility that the term "french" refers to the way the fries have been sliced into long strings, instead of referring to nationality.

Also, Dutch (Flemish) is the official language of Belgium. Interesting how the spuds didn't end up being named Flemish Fries, eh? :D

wow, i can't believe a potato thread hasn't been started yet. potatoes are the foods of the gods, in all their forms. i like potatoes made any way, but especially mashed. however, some people ruin mashed potatoes by making them gluey and over beaten. gag. that should be considered a crime. seriously though, i don't know how i'd make it through each day without potatoes.

and for those of you in the DC area: the best mashed potatoes i've ever had were at a resturant called "mikes" in va. i could eat a ton of them.

sorry 'bees, do your homework better. I've spent many a summer in Belgium with my family. Belgium has 2 national languages, French and Flemish. Everyone speaks french but not everyone speaks flemish simply because french is more useful outside of Belgium. All government documents are in both languages but French is the more "popular" language in that more people speak it.

But the idea that they are named after the cut could be the case, but we don't call them by their cut in Belgium. But it's posible. I don't know crap about cooking terms.

OMG!! I almost forgot to mention potatoe cheese soup!!! It's the bestest soup in the whole world!!! You can get it at Marie Calendars. Luckily I have a friend who is a waitress and she gives me free potatoe cheese soup. But I warn you, once you try it once you get addicted to it. :D
