I started picking up candy yesterday for my trick or treaters.
(I only give GOOD STUFF)..
Sams club is my best friend..I picked up two boxes of full size snickers, two boxes of full size hershey bars, two boxes of full size milky ways, 4 big 6 lb packages of assorted crappy candy as filler (tootsie rolls etc),4 36 count packages of those peanut butter cracker thingys,3 pounds of double bubble gum,100 hi-c juice boxes, and 5 twenty count small packages of chips. I get SLAMMED with trick or treaters so I always buy alot as I hate to run out of stuff. The kids I know (and especially the LITTLE ones in costumes) get a candy bar,a pack of crackers and peanutbutter, a juice box, and a handful of crappy stuff. I through spider rings and halloween pencils and other little toy treats in the cauldron of candy that I have near my door. Last year I put a sign up-NO COSTUME-NO CANDY, and NO ADULTS PLEASE. You can't believe how many college students I would get (NOT IN COSTUME) just coming around for candy. And the adults that would say..oh, my son is home sick and this is for him......YEH RIGHT.

Better not post your address in here. I'm sure you'd get loads of "unauthorized visitors". :D
Oblong, I wish you were my neighbor. (I could help ya eat those cinnamon rolls) My kids don't get squat from anyone around here! I usually have to buy Halloween candy twice, because hubby and the kids finish off the first batch.

I always got jipped as a kid-because people learned that lollypops were cheap, we never got anything good (some people gave us NASTY apples and one old lady gave me an old EMPTY thread spool-NO LIE)..I vowed that so long as I had kids, Halloween would be fun, I spent hours and hours making costumes and making sure that the kids who did dress up and came to my house got "good stuff"...My own kids always came home with crap but they didn't really care about the candy so much as how cool their costume was. Since I've been coaching soccer, I also have pizza and hot chocolate at the house for the kids on my team. They usually hit my house first, have their "party" then get their stash and leave. My neighbors all try to outdo each other on halloween since they heard I give good stuff. Last year, my across the street neighbor gave out cider and donuts(besides candy) and the one next to her gave out Candy apples from a local cider mill. But I am still 'GROUND ZERO" for trick or treaters, it's not unusual to get totally cleaned out before 8pm.

OK. That does it. If you're going to post stuff like this, you are REQUIRED to at least post the block number (n000's), Street Name, City, and State of your residence.

Your house does sound yummy Obby!
Growing up, one of my first stops was Mrs. White's house. She made popcorn balls every year. She always had a special one for me (usually a box of 4 or 5) set aside. She has been my life teacher. She was a teacher's aid (just retired) for me in kindergarten and first grade. She also taught my 1st grade CCD class and also was my confirmation sponsor.
This year her husband is very ill. He has lung cancer and hospice is now assisting her. So, no popcorn balls. (Yes, she is in IL and I am in NV but she still mails me my treat.)
I talked to Donnie about this and we decided that we would make them this year. We have no idea how many kids we will be getting. Most go down to the strip from what we hear. And since the base is locked down to card carrying members only, we don't have to worry about being over run by the brats surrounding the base. We are going to shoot for 100ish I think... and will have something else for a backup... we were thinking small American flags and chocolate.
Kids are already saying they are going to stop by.. we decorated last weekend and they say the house looks cool so the goodies must be cool :D
I guess we will see how it goes :)

haha, i say we use our internet tracking skillz and find the location of obby!
i agree with obby though, growing up trick or treating, we get some really ghey ass candies. i'd go home and be like.....wtf??? this year, i'm finally in a home with a neighborhood that seems full of kids. gonna splurge and give out the good stuff. and i don't care so much about parents and stuff. i'll give em candy, they have a sweet tooth anyways. i'd say most of the time they just give it right back to the kids (if they're nice parents of course).
this year, i think i'm goin to go as a college student. or maybe even passwird!

A lot of parents will throw out home made treats. Safety first and all that. What my mom would do is wrap the popcorn balls or candied apples that she made in celophane and add a tag saying who made it and her address. That way friends and neighbors can be certain it is safe.
I grew up in California so we were not allowed to keep anything that was not factory sealed (unless it came from someone we knew). This was due to the nuts who live out here. You know, the ones who moved here from the east coast...

yea, there were some nutters out there. one time we got home baked cookies, and my cousin actually attempted to eat it. i smacked it though. sometimes i wonder....

I thought about that, but living on a military base, I don't think that will be a concern. BUT, what I might do :) is order some business cards (freebie ones of course) with my name addy and maybe GGD's website addy on it... spreading the word ya know... :D

There used to be this old lady on our block who was really losing her logic. She ran out of candy one year, so she sent her husband to the store. Well by that time all the halloween candy was gone, so he bought FULL SIZE candy bars!
Hey oblong, don't be so hard on the college students and high schoolers who "trick-or-treat". Here locally you can sign up to "trick-or-treat" for Dorenbecher Children's Hospital. They give you a special bucket to collect monetary donations in. A group of us in high school did this one year, and every house except for one gave us a donation. We didn't ask for candy, but most people were forcing it on us because they thought we were so cool for doing that. We hadn't even brought along candy buckets, so we just ate it as we got it :-) Cool thing was, it was pouring rain that year and not many kids were out, so most houses had a ton of candy they knew they were goign to be stuck with, so they gave it to us. Our pockets were filled by the time we got home. Also, since it was raining, we dressed up as "Oregonians" with our rain gear and a couple snorkel masks and tubes - most people had to ask us what we were dressed as, and when we told them they thought it was hilarious.

The product of paranoid parents :dodgy:, I was never allowed to go trick-or-treating. I can't say I blame them because the neighborhood was kind of rough, and there were constantly stories of razor blades being embedded in candy.
When I was seven, one of our relatives had a Halloween BBQ (this is Southern California so it was probably 80 degrees out). She lived in a nice neighborhood, and she let me tag along when she took her kids trick-or-treating! I was unsure of what to do, but when I discovered that the doorbells actually WORKED in this neighborhood, I ran ahead of everyone and rang doorbells for the rest of the night. :D

I had heard of that program that allows volunteers to go and collect candy and donations for kids too sick to do so. Too bad some of these morons have ruined it for these well-meaning people. Then again, I did go trick or treating (I got dressed up!) when I a senior in high school.
Trick-or-treating was generally a fruitless endeavor for me as I grew up in a pretty nice area of town with gigantic lots. Well, it was mostly walking, both between houses and up the long and sometimes labyrinthine walks to get to the front door. A shame, too, because I often got some dope shi-at when I would get to a door. Still, the haul, numerically, was small.
I'm kind of sad that I live in a high-rise now. No kids live in downtown LA, and I kind of like seeing what kids are going as.
you know... obby's house and family life seem just a little too perfect... buying full size candy bars for halloween (i know many people do this, but seems like she really goes all out), baking all the time, cooking oh so wonderful sounding meals for her fam, cleaning all the time, waking up at the crack of dawn to bake and whatnot... hmmmmm...

there was this old nut on the corner that gave away king size bars every year, famous for it. it had the be the very first house to hit. to bad the neighborhood is all ghetto now. i don't know if she still does that.

I give full size candy bars every year-without fail. As far as the college and high schoolers-it would be a different story if they WERE collecting for something like what you described, unfortunately they are simply collecting candy for themselves. They don't even bother to draw on a fake mustache or wear any type of costume. They just think if they come a knockin, I'll give them candy. I had to draw the line somewhere..I get hundreds of kids at my house every year, and it's the little ones *up to age 13 or so* that still wanna dress up and enjoy halloween that will get treats from me. Once the adults started showing Up, and these 19/20 year old college students I put my foot down. They were crowding the sidewalks and not letting the little kids get through.

HAHAHAH perfect my ass!!!! It's so far NOT from perfect that it amazes me. If it was perfect I'd be swimming in the mediterranean with Mel Gibson and not schleping ground meat into meals 6 days a week.. I'm just not cheap when it comes to spending on holidays. And I don't bake ALL the time. Only when I'm bored or when I don't have anything else to do. And yes, I do cook a decent meal ALMOST EVERY NIGHT. I enjoy cooking and spend alot of time doing it, And I can't stand waking up to a house filled with crap. Dishes in the sink are disgusting and unsanitary (I have a fetish about clean houses-sorry, us old ladies get that way). I used to make my kids do "visitor checks"..where they would have to stand at the front door, look in and see EXACTLY what someone else would see if they were walking into the house...granted the occasional tube sock would be wedged into one of the chairs in the living room, but not very often. My daughters hated me for being so strict but now that they have their own kids they see why I did what I had to do. What I do now is more just habit than anything else.
