I'm another victim of being scammed on eBay. I sent the money via paypal about a month ago and still have not received any product. The phone number that is listed with eBay is fake and they will not respond to my emails. Do you think I have any recorse in this matter?

Just reported it to paypal and Citibank. Hopefully everything will work out okay. Makes me think twice about auction transactions. As they say, "If it's too good to be true, it probably is."

Another thing to look into is the Ebay insurance (I think they still have it) it is automatic on every purchase for up to $200 with a $25 deductible. Go to the Ebay site map and check it out.

Unfortunately, that doesn't cover the amount of my purchase which was $1700.00.

OUCH! Well, Citibank should come through for you even if PayPal does not. I have had to dispute several things through Citibank and they have always resolved in my favor.

Damn what was it?
Maybe somebody can track them down if you gave more info.

I bought some rims and tires for my car. Here is the link to the auction:

Here is the information that I got from eBay's (Useless) User Information Request:
User ID: olgabenedict
Name: olga benedict
Company:
City: Cupertino
State: CA
Country: United States
Phone: (415) 430 - 2160 ext. 9665
Time/Date: Monday, Sep 10, 2001 19:15:57 PDT
I used the theultimates.com to look for anyone with the last name of Benedict in the Bay area and came up with diddly.

No feedback. Big dollar item.
Best bet would have been to use an escrow service. Or to pay directly by credit card. Paypal is more of a cash service so your credit card protection is limited.
All I can say is good luck. Hope it works out for you. Keep us posted as to the outcome.

Another bidder on your auction was:
User ID History for imbestseller77729
Member since Monday, Sep 10, 2001 no feedback
sounds fishy to me same date as olga benedict

Umm, they did not even spell Mercedes right! What the hell, that plus zero feedback and they just registered on 9/10, kind of adds up to a screw job.

I just figured that paypal would protect me if anything went awry. We'll see what happens. I just got my letter from Citibank today requesting the facts.

man that's a big loss man. I feel for you. I just got ripped off by a seller on eBay motors, too. It wasn't even close to the cost of your item, but it was definitely a rip off. The thing was he actually had a lot of positive feedback. There were some negatives mixed in here and there, but I decided to trust him. It was a mistake. And he even replied to all my e-mails, but he just kept saying it'll ship soon everytime. Before I knew it, 60 days had passed and I couldn't even get any protection. I just sort of gave up. I don't even want the money back anymore. I just want to get revenge on him in one way or another. sucks...

You can file a complaint with paypal and get a full refund. It takes about a month though. Also file a fraud report with ebay.

UPDATE: It looks like paypal is in the process of transferring the funds back to my credit card which is super sweet. However, other individuals have now been screwed since this jerk listed some auctions for some notebook computers around the value of $2000. This is going to get interesting.
eBay Fraud system gave me some new info:

It's a real address... I just asked one of my friends that is from Cupertino if he was familiar w/ that area. He says it's kind of rural. Since the amount frauded between all the individuals amounts to over $10,000, I'm sure some other law enforcement would want to get involved. But then... they have better things to do... like investigate anthrax scares... which is pretty important too.

Are you sure it's real? I was one of her frauds (luckily I didn't actually send money though) and my last name is Lockwood. Wild coincidence - especially since when I got her contact info from Ebay, no street address was listed. The phone number is just a free VM service from www.onebox.com
Ebay did suspend the 'olgabenedict' account. Or at least I asked them directly about this and they replied
As you may also know, we are unable to provide specific information regarding the result of our investigation to any third party members. Please understand that this is for the protection of all eBay users. However, we can tell you that our records indicate the user you are reporting is currently not a registered eBay user.
Good luck on getting your money back! I used escrow service in my next auction, am still in the middle of that deal, will try to get back and let you guys know how it worked out. I'm paying the escrow people about $50 on a $1300 purchase, it's worth it.
